Living Like a Warrior. Editor’s Note: This is a guest post from Evan and Spencer Burton.

Living Like a Warrior

They author the blog Living Indubiously. It was not long ago that men were born to be warriors and had no other obligations than to uphold the warrior code and to pass it on to their offspring. It was only during the past 500 years that man forgot this way of life and replaced it with a complacency seemingly suited for a new world of convenience. The time that has passed since we have forgotten our warrior days has been a mere fraction of the entire existence of humans, meaning that this warrior instinct is still entirely intact and awaiting to be awoken in the lives of all men. A Warrior’s life was driven by his own survival instinct and his fear of death.

It is only until after a life changing event that most of us have this warrior instinct woken within us. It is through the understanding and application of the following ideas that you too can achieve true warrior status and get on the never-ending road to greatness. Be a Better Man in 30 Days. During the month of June 2009, The Art of Manliness ran a series of posts called “30 Days to a Better Man.”

Be a Better Man in 30 Days

Each day we created a task for Art of Manliness readers to complete that would help them improve in different facets of their lives such as relationships, fitness and health, career, and personal finances. We also had a very active Better Man Community Group where participants reported in how they did on the task and gave suggestions and encouragement to other members. Over all, I was very happy with the project and feel that lots of men got something out of it. Below, we’ve created a summary of the entire month’s tasks, with links to each individual day. If you started the challenge late or you’re a new reader, this list will help you navigate through each day’s tasks. Also, at the recommendation of several readers, I’m working on putting this series into a well polished PDF eBook.

Thanks to everyone who participated! Day 1: Define Your Core Values Day 2: Shine Your Shoes. How to Be Resilient. How did you do on the hardihood quiz?

How to Be Resilient

Not so hot? Well join the club. There are a lot of virtues lacking in the current generation of men, but I think an argument can be made that our lack of resiliency is the most critical. And I say that as a man who has himself struggled to live this virtue. In law school, I engaged in a pathetic routine each semester. When my grades would finally come in, I would be relieved to find I hadn’t flunked out, Kate would chide me for my irrational behavior, and I would swear that I wouldn’t waste my time doing that again.

I was in serious need of some resiliency. What is Resiliency? Studies have shown that boosting your resilience increases your resistance to stress and can greatly lower your chances of becoming depressed. We all have times when life makes us want to crawl into a hole; resiliency is what helps us dust ourselves off and climb back into the saddle instead. 5 characteristics of a hero. Last week was Kid’s Camp at our church.

5 characteristics of a hero

We had an awesome time. We had over 60 kids who participated! We were blessed to have a group from another church come and help us lead it. We couldn’t have done it without them! The theme of the camp was: everyone can be a hero! To make this point, we looked at different stories from the Bible of unnamed heroes (many of whom were kids) and what characteristics they demonstrated.

Crafting the Life You Want: Gathering Your Tools

Win $100K to finally do what you love. Enter now. What’s this? Welcome back to our three part series on crafting the life you want. Every craftsman has a set of tools that he uses to shape and build his wares. Just as artisans need the proper tools to fashion their masterpieces, we need the right tools in our quest to craft an extraordinary life. A Mentor A young craftsman beginning his trade education would seek an apprenticeship under a master craftsman. Today, many men have gone through life without a mentor of some sort, which is a shame, because mentors can be a valuable tool in crafting the life you want.

If you don’t have a mentor, I challenge you to make it a goal to find one today. If you’re an older man, I challenge you to go and find a young buck that you can bring under your wing, err… I mean hoof, and provide some guidance.
