Rock and Ice Magazine: Built By Climbers

It started, almost innocuously, with a post by Malcolm Daly asking for information on who the first climber of color was to climb Denali. Internet back-and-forth followed, some of which surprised James Edward Mills, a member of the upcoming "Expedition Denali, Inspiring Diversity in the Outdoors," which aims to put the first team of black climbers on the summit of Denali. "Please, don’t tell me, a person of color and climber in the world of mountaineering, that I shouldn’t care and that racial diversity shouldn’t matter," he writes in an insightful commentary on his Joy Trip Project, here. "[W]ithin under-represented minority groups, to those individuals it matters a great deal," his commentary continues, citing role modeling; encouraging youth of color to be outdoors, pursue careers in it, and be part of conservation; and preservation of cultural history. http://www.rockandice.com/
