GM plant trials to be held by Teagasc - The Irish Times - Tue, Feb 28. GENETICALLY MODIFIED crop trials may get under way later this year, which would be the first time in almost 15 years that GM plants would be grown in the open. Environmental groups have already said they will oppose the move, arguing it will undermine our reputation for clean, green food. Agricultural research and advisory body Teagasc yesterday stated its intention to seek a licence from the Environmental Protection Agency to plant GM crops at its research centre in Oak Park, Co Carlow. It was part of an EU-funded initiative to assess any impact on soil ecology caused by GM crops, said Dr Ewen Mullins, a senior research officer in charge of GM crop assessment at Teagasc.

The licence if granted would permit Teagasc to plant genetically modified potatoes that are resistant to blight, he said. The GM potatoes were developed at Wageningen University in the Netherlands and no biotechnology or GM company was involved, Dr Mullins said. This would be different, Dr Mullins said. Molecular Medicine Ireland Newsletter. In this issue: Following a widely-advertised call, this prestigious new 4-year structured PhD programme has awarded 20 Scholarships. There were 123 applications to MMI. Applicants nominated their preferred host institution from the academic partners NUI Galway, TCD, UCC and UCD. Applications were short-listed in the partner institutions and 40 candidates for scholarships were invited to interviews. The interview process was collaborative and reflected the stakeholders in the CTRSP and the key aims of the programme to produce graduates who bridge gaps between basic scientists, clinical scientists and industry, and to prepare scholars for careers in industry and academic medical centres and opportunities as biomedical entrepreneurs.

The formal launch of the MMI Clinical & Translational Research Scholars Programme will be in September (more information to follow), and the 20 MMI Scholars will begin their studies in October with a 4-week period of taught courses delivered in Dublin.
