The horse chestnut and the lilac are two prized ornamental trees and shrubs cultivated today throughout temperate parts of the world but native to only on the Balkan Peninsula. While introduced to gardens in Vienna, Venice and Florence very early in the Renaissance, the origins of the horse chestnut and the lilac were lost until rediscovered in the wild in Greece and Bulgaria during the late eighteenth century.
