Utility Industry Stock Outlook - Oct. 2012 - Industry Outlook. As would be expected, the growth of the utility industry is tied to overall economic conditions. As per the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), energy consumption in the United States will increase 0.3% annually from 2010 through 2035. EIA's assumption takes into consideration modest growth in economic conditions after the recessionary period of 2008-2009 and increase in the energy efficiency level. The majority of new power in this period will be generated from natural gas and renewable sources.

As per the EIA report, the rise in demand for energy over the 2010 to 2035 period is because of stepped-up demand from commercial, industrial, transportation and residential sectors. Besides growth in demand from the commercial sector, the EIA report shows that the industrial sector will also recover from the 2008-2009 recession, leading to higher volume of energy consumption. Global Scenario Unending demand: This basic tenet will remain the driving force for the industry.

A Texas-sized challenge. EnerNOC Continues To Push Outside Its Core Business, This Time Into Nat Gas. By Katherine Tweed EnerNOC (ENOC), best known as the top dog in demand response, is adding to its portfolio. Instead of more megawatts or square feet of building controls, EnerNOC is moving into natural gas. The company will manage natural gas consumption at about 4,000 commercial, institutional and industrial customer sites for National Grid in New York City.

The five-year agreement includes hardware for fuel switching and on-site sensors that detect outdoor temperatures. The platform will automatically shift fuel consumption to optimize the use of fuel sources based on weather availability. Unlike demand response events, which are used in summer peak electricity demand for most of the country, the platform will be used when winter heating peaks in the Big Apple. "Natural gas is a very attractive fuel for many of our customers, especially as prices have declined to historic lows. It is not the first time EnerNOC's platform will support gas.
