Set in a half-formed world at the beginning of time and space, we follow two spirits named Tophole and Pantalingua, who together conspire to prevent the creation of Earth. The Humans is co-commissioned by Performa and Witte de With (Rotterdam), and co-presented in New York with Brooklyn Academy of Music. En capturant les sons et les mouvements qu’il injecte ensuite dans ses films d’animations, puis en confiant l’écriture du scénario à un logiciel qui en poursuit l’histoire, Ian Cheng modifie la relation « naturelle » que nous entretenons avec le réel : c’est l’ordinateur qui raconte, et il raconte une histoire qui ne s’achève jamais.
Selon les termes de l’artiste, « le récit présenté n’est pas une histoire humaine, mais un document vivant dont les algorithmes évolutifs alimentent la mutation des formes et des combinaisons en calamités imprévues.
