Slide Show | Getting Crazy with Oatmeal: 19 Sweet and Savory Oatmeal Toppings. Curried Oatmeal with Caramelized Onions. Now that you have a pan of deeply caramelized onions, what do you do with them? Well, one of my favorite ways to eat them is for breakfast.

Yep, savory breakfasts. Such an un-American thing. Before anyone accuses me of being unpatriotic, let me clarify. I mean no disrespect, but breakfasts in America—with a few sausage and bacon-like exceptions—generally fall into one of three categories: starchy, eggy, or sweet. (With the inevitable cold pizza, on occasion.) Not so in other countries. In Britain there are kippers, in Austria there are cold cuts and cheese on rolls, but it is Asia where savory breakfasts really come into their own. Do you know about congee? I’d say more of the world eats a savory breakfast than sweet. Five years living in Asia shook me out of any breakfast rut I might have been in. I decided to take it savory. These days one of my very favorite breakfasts—the one I have to ration because I find it totally addictive—is curried oatmeal with caramelized onions. I’ve never made it. Although I’ve seen a few variations around the web, somehow I just couldn’t get my arms around eating oatmeal with savory and salty notes. I think it’s similar to the way many people think about breakfast. We’re accustomed to eating sweets for breakfast and baked goods. Well, I took my friend’s question as a challenge – and I wish I had tried savory oatmeal sooner. At its most basic, I simply cooked the oatmeal in some chicken broth with a slice of ginger, topped it with a poached egg, drizzled a little soy sauce and sesame oil on top, and added a sprinkling of chopped scallions.

I’ve been writing about the real food I’ve been eating and my love for oatmeal breakfasts for over five years now. On my Tribute To Oatmeal page, I have hundreds of bowls of creamy oatmeal filled with toppings galore. One of my favorite oat-based breakfasts happens to be overnight oats. Overnight oats are rolled oats soaked in milk and yogurt for a substantial period of time so they become plump enough to eat. Although you can eat oats plain, they are a bit more appealing when “cooked” or soaked one way or another. Overnight oats have quite a few perks: There are many variations to overnight oats – vegan versions, no yogurt, plus chia seeds, and more.

January 21, 2012 by Robin Ellis My copies of Rose Elliot’s vegetarian cookbooks, Not Just a Load of Lentils and The Bean Book, have been on my bookshelves for ages and are much thumbed! I. Sweet Potato and Fennel Curry. India has been on my brain for the past few weeks. It feels like ages since I got on that plane and headed to Mumbai earlier this year. The waterfalls, the beach, the ashram… I returned home with a strong sense of self, a free soul and a happy heart. Maybe this yearning has been sparked by all the yoga I’ve been doing, the Indian food I’ve started to eat again, or the calm I’ve been injecting into my life.

Either way, my heart longs to go back. With each day that passes, I get more rooted in Montreal and more interested in going back to India a second time. In fact, I spent most of yesterday evening planning out a second, more extensive, trip for the new year. Until I figure out how to get myself there, I’ll just continue to eat my weight in Indian food, practice yoga, and stay true to myself. Oh yes, and go on grand adventures in this new city of ours!

We checked out Montreal’s underground city a couple of days ago and boy, was it something. That’s insane. print, email or text this recipe. Indian-Style Fennel Curry • TuroK Like Food.
