Guns Kill People. Period. - A Capital View

Guns kill people. Period. The tragedy at Virginia Tech should open our minds to a problem our nation refuses to confront. The easy access to guns and lethal weapons is a national disgrace. In Virginia alone, gun owners are limited to one purchase a month. I can hear the response from the NRA already: People kill people. The condolences from the NRA are of little comfort to the mourners of those slaughtered in Blacksburg. The NRA, to put it bluntly, has too many willing friends in Congress from both political parties. The Second Amendment, a biblical passage to its followers, may give a right to bear arms. I was raised in South Dakota, where hunting pheasants and ducks is a tradition. Hunting is perfectly legal. But the NRA and its PR machine cry foul at any attempt to restrict access to guns. Summary of Gun Legislation

(The information in this report has been updated by OLR Report 2013-R-0001. Please see that report. ) The Connecticut Constitution (Article First, § 15) gives every citizen the right to bear arms in defense of himself and the state. But state law regulates firearm sales, use, and possession. For regulatory purposes, the law classifies “firearms” into four groups: handguns (pistols and revolvers), long guns (rifles and shotguns), assault weapons, and machine guns. With minor exceptions, (1) anyone buying or otherwise acquiring a handgun in Connecticut, whether from a licensed gun dealer or an unlicensed person, must have an eligibility certificate or a permit to sell or carry handguns, and (2) anyone carrying a handgun (except in one's home or business) must have a permit to carry handguns.

Colorado shootings reignite gun control debate. AURORA, Colo. – In Colorado, people often hike into bear country carrying pistols, cowboys ride horses with a rifle holstered behind the saddle, and professors and college students routinely carry concealed weapons. So the horrifying mass shooting at a movie theater that left 12 people dead Friday raises the question: If the theater had not been a gun-free zone, would a civilian have stopped the gunman?

Some gun rights advocates say the tragedy shows why people should be allowed to carry concealed weapons in more, not fewer, places. Ray Hickman, a spokesman for the Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, says gun-free zones like the one at the theater are failures. "Columbine, Virginia Tech and this — the three worst shootings in our history and what's the common thread? They were all gun-free zones," Hickman says. Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, disagrees. "If there were three or four people with concealed weapons in there, they could have stopped him," Paszel says.
