Why Do We Need Doctoral Study in Design? Why Do We Need Doctoral Study in Design? Meredith Davis North Carolina State University, North Carolina, USA This article makes a case for why design research is important to contemporary design practice and the deepening of the design disciplines, especially at this point in our history. It identifies the pressures on knowledge generation exerted by the shift from a mechanical, object-centered paradigm for design practice to one characterized by systems that: evolve and behave organically; transfer control from designers to users or participants; emphasize the importance of community; acknowledge media convergence; and require work by interdisciplinary teams to address the complexity of contemporary problems.
Further, the text addresses the rather checkered past of design research programs in universities in the United States of America (USA), and the international positions by professional design associations on the development of research cultures. Kathy van Gogh of Fake It in British Columbia, Canada recently sent in pictures of an interior floor job she completed. "My client wanted their floor to reflect the location of their new house-one block from the beach," she said.
The client shared his vision with her but ultimately left the design and artwork up to her. He never specified an exact color, just the feeling he wanted. "He said he wanted his home to look like Anthony and Cleopatra at the beach," she said. While deciding on the design for the floor, Kathy examined various trinkets the client left to inspire her, including sea shells and items in old copper color and blue colors. She also examined the various colors and belongings in the home. TechniquesThe client is an award-winning landscape designer whose home landscape consisted of large granite and slabs of rock. What Do You Say About a Traditional Arabic Style with a Contemporary Look? That’s a fusion that worked very well for Hookah Lounge Satelite realized by BNKR Arquitectura. I am talking about a restaurant and a night club opened in Ciudad Satélite, a satellite city of Mexico City conceived in 1954 by Mario Pani. People living here were considered outsiders. This complex makes them invade the city center’s restaurants, shops, bars and nightclubs in a frustrated need to experience a sense of belonging.

Cardboard is becoming an eco-friendly material of choice for furniture design, and sustainable designers have put it to many uses. It is used both for chic contemporary cardboard thrones as well as cardboard cribs and doll cradles. Bringing cardboard interior design outside of the individual home and into the broader community, however, is Israeli designer Tali Buchler who designed an upcycled and cardboard-based lobby for Zichron Yaakov’s community center.
Cleverly titled “Outside the Box”, Buchler’s design consists of a modular furniture system made of recycled materials. “Being an educational center,” Buchler writes, “it was important for me to inspire the community for green living, by using primarily recycled materials, showing a simple way to construct furniture as an alternative for buying.” Almost all the materials in “Outside the Box” are upcycled. :: Tali Buchler.
SPACE Magazine. The strategies of hybridisation of the 90s, more often than not, resulted in the smooth blending of one tectonic surface with another. Accompanying this tendency is the belief that the formal procedure of blending will naturally result in the cross-breeding of programme. Blue Frog for us is a project that revisits the problem of multi-programmed spaces without resorting to formal redundancy as a representation of programmatic complexity. The project brief called for the conversion of a large north-lit industrial warehouse within the old mill district in Mumbai into a complex of sound recording studios and an acoustic lounge. All you need for this project is your drill with a drill bit on it, and a piece of wood. The drill bit depends on the size of hole you need. Just compare your bits to your brushes, as you can vary the sizes of holes. For the wood I used this cut branch, but a simple block of wood will do the trick too. Just drill straight down with as many holes as you need. Voila! Stick your makeup brushes in it and you are good to go!
I love how this keeps my brushes stored upright. You could also make this for storing office supplies, like pens and pencils. Super simple! (You can view this original post at Organized Mom HERE.) DIY Doily Light: Simple Suspended-Sphere Lace Lamp Shade.
So simple a child could make it – and have fun in the process, too. And the result? A shining example of how light and shadow can work together to brighten up a room. Swedish craftswoman Isabelle Dos started with a simple party-shop balloon, blown up big and wrapped in white lace place settings painted with wallpaper glue. The soaked material sticks readily to the sides of the inflated sphere, overlapping to form a contiguous shell, suspended and left to dry overnight like a plaster cast. Pop the balloon and presto: a little cut in the top lets you drop in a bare bulb and create your own chandelier, potentially using whatever pattern you want (if lace feels a little too old-fashioned) to frame the outside and filter the light.
