The Physics Classroom. Current Electricity - Table of Contents. Newton's Laws - Table of Contents. Lesson Plans. Chapter 1: Matter—Solids, Liquids, and Gases Students are introduced to the idea that matter is composed of atoms and molecules that are attracted to each other and in constant motion.

Lesson Plans

Students explore the attractions and motion of atoms and molecules as they experiment with and observe the heating and cooling of a solid, liquid, and gas. Chapter 2: Changes of State. Chapter 5: The Water Molecule and Dissolving. Have students work in groups to design an experiment to investigate whether the temperature of water affects the amount of M&M coating that dissolves.

Chapter 5: The Water Molecule and Dissolving

Remind students of the experiment they did in Lesson 4 in which they placed an M&M in water and watched the colored sugar coating dissolve. In that experiment, students used water and then alcohol and oil to see if the solvent used affects the dissolving of the M&M coating.
