First dates are awkward. There is so much you want to know about the person across the table from you, and yet so little you can directly ask. This post is our attempt to end the mystery. We took OkCupid's database of 275,294 match questions—probably the biggest collection of relationship concerns on earth—and the 776 million answers people have given us, and we asked: Love, sex, a soulmate, an argument, whatever you're looking for, we'll show you the polite questions to find it.

Central to many religions, both Eastern and Western, is the doctrine of dualism: that there is a non-material essence called the soul that inhabits and animates our bodies and is the cause and the source of consciousness, personality, free will, thoughts, ideas, feelings, emotions, memories, the sense of self - in short, everything a person thinks of as "I". Theists typically believe that the soul survives the physical death of the body and goes on to whatever comes after death, be it an afterlife in Heaven or Hell or reincarnation in a new body. I am an atheist because I have found no evidence that leads me to believe that the supernatural claims of any religion are true, and the notion of the soul is no exception.

Ever notice that you almost never see the terms "equal rights" and "atheists" in the same sentence? Let me explain why. Imagine a public high school with a serious discrimination problem, an institution with attitudes and practices about race, gender , and religion that are terribly outdated. Three students have decided they've had enough, and each sues to fight back against the unfair prejudice. George, an African-American, has been excluded from the school's marching band because the band director is racist and will only let white kids participate. So brilliant writer and Iraq War apologist Christopher Hitchens died last night. Almost immediately, #GodIsNotGreat started trending on Twitter. It's the title of one of Hitchens' books, of course, but it made a lot of people angry. Many people, presumably of faith, had no idea that this was a book reference. So they got upset, and began tweeting about it.

Lifelong atheist with a PhD in New Testament and Early Christianity: AMA. : atheism
As the title says, I've been an atheist my entire life, but I chose to get a PhD in New Testament and Early Christianity because the subject matter fascinates me. I look at Christianity and the New Testament through a sociological lens. I don't have any deep-seated anger toward Christians or Christianity, though I do believe religion is misguided, so I am relatively objective in the way I approach the subject. If you've ever had questions about the "historical" Jesus, early Christian history, Judao-Christian myths and so on, without having to get your answers filtered either through religious dogmatists or crackpot atheists, ask me anything! EDIT: it's now around 11pm on Wednesday night (Eastern time), and the AMA seems to be winding down. I'll be happy to answer questions and continue conversations for another day, and then let the AMA quietly fade out. These are frequently asked questions -- and the answers which are most frequently given to those questions, when those questions are posed to /r/atheism .
