Loft Space in Camden by Craft Design. The latest residence to feature a combined staircase and bookshelf is this loft conversion in north London by British design studio Craft Design. (+ slideshow) Craft Design renovated a former office to create the open-plan residence, inserting a central bathroom that separates the kitchen and dining area from the living room, while also providing the framework for a first-floor bed deck. The gabled end wall is covered with bookshelves, providing storage for three different areas. The staircase is formed from a series of extruded shelves and leads up from the living room to the mezzanine sleeping area. "The idea was to maximise the sense of space as well as keeping a simple and efficient layout," said designers Hugo D'Enjoy and Armando Elias.

The designers kept to a simple palette of wooden flooring with white walls and fittings, allowing the owner to add colour by displaying books and other collected items. An historic 1935 Greek Revival cottage in the Clarksville neighborhood of Austin paired with a very creative family to provide the starting point for this project. Above and beyond the programatic goals of creating 2 new children’s bedrooms and bath, we sought to create a home that honored the past while not being overly reverential. Some elements of the new construction, such as rebuilding the original roof 4′ above where it had been, are intended to look as thought they had always been there.

Other elements of the new construction, such as the master bath wing and the dormers in front, are intentionally modern in their aesthetic. Also of note for this project was a process that allowed for the design to evolve as different existing conditions were uncovered during construction. The client kept a blog during the design and construction phase, with lots of interesting history and information about the house.
