We Do Get Fooled Again: Progressives and the ‘Monsanto Protection Act’ As a lifelong progressive, it pains me to admit it, but progressives can be such chumps sometimes. If you’ve visited progressive web sites or Facebook pages in the last few days, you’ve probably seen the headlines declaring that President Obama had signed the “Monsanto Protection Act.” The headlines are usually accompanied by words like “disappointing,” “betrayal” and “sellout.” Progressives are outraged. Conservatives are amused. Conspiracy sites such as Alex Jones’ Infowars and the dailypaul.com are gleeful. (I must admit I’m a little confused about the Paul Bots. Here’s the thing, progressives. Prior centuries have seen entire civilizations intuit both how to live sustainably within the Earth's natural parameters; and future crises such as the Year 2012 as one of convergence, emergence, and possible disaster. I believe 2012 will be a tipping point year for the good of humanity. Join our email list: Stay up to date with the latest headlines via email. It seems that everywhere, these days, people are talking about anarchism. Now Dmitry Orlov joins the discussion with a 3-part series, “In Praise of Anarchy.” Utilizing primarily the work of the 19th century Russian anarchist, Peter Kropotkin, Orlov argues that anarchy, rather than hierarchy, is the dominant pattern in nature, that hierarchical organizations ultimately end in collapse, and that the impending collapse of the capitalist industrial system presents an opportunity for the emergence of anarchism.
Orlov,(aka kollapsnik at Club Orlov), is probably best-known for his book, Reinventing Collapse, in which he compares the collapse of the Soviet Union with the imminent collapse of the United States. With a wry Russian wit I find immensely attractive, Orlov describes in Reinventing Collapse how people in the USSR were better positioned than are Americans for economic collapse.
