VDOE :: Mathematics Standards of Learning Resources

The Standards of Learning and Curriculum Framework comprise the mathematics content that teachers in Virginia are expected to teach and students are expected to learn. Test Blueprints provide information on how SOL assessments and VMAST assessments are constructed. Enhanced Scope and Sequence (ESS) Sample Lesson Plans are aligned with the 26009 Mathematics SOL Curriculum Framework; searchable by keyword and SOL. SOL Practice Items and VMAST Practice Items (based on the 2009 Mathematics SOL) and Released SOL Tests (based on the 2001 Mathematics SOL) provide examples of state assessment items. * Curriculum Framework documents include contents of supplement adopted by the Board of Education on January 13, 2011, to ensure alignment with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. See below for more information on Common Core. http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/standards_docs/mathematics/index.shtml
The fifth-grade standards place emphasis on number sense with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. This focus includes concepts of prime and composite numbers, identifying even and odd numbers, and solving problems using order of operations for positive whole numbers. Students will develop proficiency in the use of fractions and decimals to solve problems. http://www.fcps.edu/is/pos/documents/es/math5.htm
