Epson Perfection 4990 Photo Review & Rating. By M. David Stone The Epson Perfection 4990 Photo ($450 street) is one of the most photocentric flatbeds we've seen. This makes sense for a scanner aimed at photo enthusiasts. Among its strengths are high quality photo scans; the ability to scan film in 35mm, 120, 220, 2.25-inch, 6 by 12 cm, and 4- by 5-inch formats; and a claimed resolution suitable for film, at 4800 pixels per inch (ppi) optical by 9600 ppi mechanical. The 4990 Photo did particularly well with photos, offering high quality scans that let us print near matches to the originals. For slides and film, the 4990 Photo is remarkably similar to the Canon CanoScan 9950F in making film scanning easy on a flatbed. Scan quality for slides and film isn't a match for a good film scanner but is far better than most flatbeds.
Unlike the 9950F, the 4990 Photo largely overlooks anything not directly concerned with photos. Compare the two scanners mentioned above side by side. HOW TO: Back Up And Upgrade The Mac mini Hard Drive. Recently I picked up a PowerBook, and while I expected it to be “okay”, I did not expect to fall in love with OS X the way that I have. I am completely smitten. So much so that I had to pick up a Mac mini so that I would have a desktop Mac solution (and because it just calls your name when shopping at the Apple Store).
The 80 GB version struck my fancy, but soon I realized that I am not one that enjoys playing mouse cursor beach ball all that much. The mini had half a gig of RAM in it, but the 4200-RPM drive was just holding me back. It was time to upgrade to a 5400 RPM 100 GB drive. Rather than taking it in to a service center where they would overcharge me, I did it on my own. Okay, let me preface this by saying I know how hard it can be to bring yourself to pry open your quaint little Mac. Neat Video: noise reduction to make video cleaner. --> Versione Italiana <-- Created on 27 April 2006Last Modified on 5 May 2006 I assume you already know how to open your Mini since there are many guides around about it.If you are looking for details look at this VIDEO.After opening the Mini, remove the black plastic assembly paying attention to: - 4 black screws in the corners - the black cable for the hard drive sensor - the flat cable for the audio module - the Airport antenna Then remove the metal cylinder near the memory slots (with a torx or a small flat screwdriver). Disconnect the power button cable close to the posterior panel... ...and the front led's one. Now you can slowly unmount the motherboard from the case (takin' it from the front),paying attention to the thermal pad over the southbridge on the opposite layer of the motherboard(it keeps the southbridge within safe limits with passive cooling!).
