You Can Finally Be An Artist With This Self-Portrait Machine

We’ve come across plenty of drawing machines in our time, but we’ve never seen one quite like this. New Media artists Kyle McDonald and Matt Mets unveiled a new project called “Blind Self-Portrait” this weekend at the 3rd Annual NYC Resistor Interactive Show. The project takes the idea of collaborating on a drawing with a machine to a whole new level. “Blind Self-Portrait” is a device that guides the viewer’s hand in drawing a self-portrait. Created with openFrameworks, FaceTracker, and parts of a MakerBot, the machine takes a photograph of the user’s face. As is usually the case, Interlock managed to cajole/bribe the organizers of BarCamp Rochester into giving us a table in the atrium, upon which we could set up our wares and lure in unsuspecting geeks.

The conference itself was really great, with lots of interesting talks, and lots of attendees and traffic by our table. Everybody seemed quite excited about the “Skeletonizing Carcasses with Flesh-eating Beetles” talk, myself included. In the past, we’ve had a slight lack of table-sized projects that moved, made noise, or otherwise stimulated people to come talk to us and see what Interlock is all about… but no longer! After becoming a little obsessed with old pen plotters over the past few months, I decided I’d like to try assembling my own drawing robot. The main goal, again, was to have something small, cool, and interactive to attract folks at events where we have a table or booth. I was without camera for most of the month, so documentation is non-existent.

Build a mini cnc machine for $45 - My various projects

Creating physical 3D models on the cheap is something that I've been interested in for a while. Building a scaled down CNC machine to learn how stepper motors, 3D axis controllers and CNC software works at a minimal cost was my goal. I've managed to do this for only $45 and a few evenings. Hektor: Jürg Lehni & Uli Franke 2002 ~ Hektor is a portable spray paint output device for computers.

Hektor:

It was created in collaboration with engineer Uli Franke for Jürg Lehniʼs diploma project at ECAL (École cantonale dʼart de Lausanne) in 2002. Hektor’s light and fragile mechanism consists only of two motors, toothed belts and a spray can holder. By the means of geometric triangulation and gravity, a custom software moves the spray can along predefined drawing paths and remotely activates the can’s nozzle. Due to mechanismʼs fragile nature, Hektor appears to be in constant negotiation with gravity, causing it to sometimes tremble and wobble. The machine was created to explore the ambiguous and poetic qualities that stem from the contrast between these low-tech aspects and the precision of the vector graphics technology that is at work behind the scenes.

Hektor is controlled by a bespoke software written in Scriptographer, running inside Adobe Illustrator. Home.
