Mind-Blowing: 8,000 Chopsticks Used by Yuya Ushida to Create a Retractable Sofa. German based designer Yuya Ushida has recently completed Sofa_XXXX, an incredible product that is both contractible and retractile, which makes it highly versatile. According to Co.Design, the designer used no less than 8000 chopstick for this uncommon sofa, cut into four different lengths in order to form X-shaped components that could build the structure. All the elements war joined perfectly (check out the photos for amazing details), so much so that up to three people of 70 kilos each can sit together on the sofa without it being caused any damage.

Moreover, the unusual looking furniture piece can be easily transformed into a chair and then back again by expanding (pulling) and contracting (pushing) the structure. We’ve also uploaded a video with a demonstration. Have a look and let us know what you think of this crazy design project. Minimalist and Refined Dining Set: TABBED Collection. Scott, Rich & Victoria from New Zealand have designed a beautiful dining collection characterized by style, creativity and simplicity. Here is the description we received from the designers: Consisting of dining chairs and matching tables the TABBED collection is a family of products defined by interaction between folded planes of sheet metal and hand finished oak elements. With refined details and sophisticated folds the TABBED collection is an elegant marriage of materials. The designs in the set are available in a variety of natural and stained colour combinations which means they are highly adaptable to a large variety of interiors.

Even though our attention was initially captured by the white version of the dining collection, the other color combinations are just as lovely. Industrial Archeology Furniture by Mieke Meijer. Since 1959, German artists Bernd and Hilla Becher dedicated themselves to registering the remnants of the industrial age in Western Europe and the United States through photography. In the 20th century, many of these buildings were pulled down because they had served their purpose and were no longer a tenable economic proposition. In many cases the photographs taken by the Bechers remain the only visual record of these ‘anonymous’ structures. Inspired by the photographs of these industrial buildings, Dutch designer Mieke Meijer created the Industrial Archeology series of furniture. She has restored the disused industrial shapes and placed them in a new context. By reducing the scale and playing with volume, Mieke Meijer creates autonomous interior objects with an architectural feel.

During Salone del Mobile 2010 she presented ‘Gravel Plant 01‘ and the collection was continued with ‘Gravel Plant 02‘, first presented during London Design Festival 2010. So what do you think? Tribute to the Olympic Games: Vintage Sofa and Trunk Duo. With a vintage inspired Olympian moleskin fabric, this chesterfield style sofa, perfectly complemented by an original looking trunk can add loads of personality. According to Decoist, the Sir Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent inspired sofa and trunk were especially developed as a tribute to this year’s coming Olympic games in London. Both the vintage Olympic poster print adorning the trunk and the Olympic inspired moleskin fabric, are a statement for any sports enthusiast. Colorful and original looking, these two items not only go great together, but are easily adaptable to a variety of decors with a simple color palette. The price tag on the two items- £2399 and £629- may get yo down, but remember Freshome is all about ideas, so feel free to improvise!

Original Wood and Glass Table by Paco Camús: Yris. Paco Camús sent us photos of an impressive item in his Private Collection, an elegant furniture piece entitled Table Yris. The project was developed by using solid wood (American walnut) and glass (15 mm thick), with original results. Table Yris has a mixed surface, with the edges abruptly changing from wood to glass along its whole perimeter. According to the designer, the project is the consequence of a series of geometric studies.

The legs are attached to the oval base providing the table with great rigidity, while ensuring the elegance and lightness of the design. Perfectly suited for minimalist interiors, Table Yris provides different visual perspectives, depending on the standpoint. Enjoy the photos below and be sure to check out the rest of the items in Paco Camús’ Private Collection here. Paco Camús - Private Collection.

Sculptural Bronze Furniture by Nick Davis. Producing bronze furniture and sculpture in his studio-foundry based in the UK is what international artist and designer Nick Davis does best. His unusual pieces range from tables, chairs and cabinets through to lamps and coat hooks all made from the ancient material. His furniture designs explore collage and constructivism, honouring the sculptural techniques of past and present artists. His work is a reaction to contemporary themes relating to the collapse of structures of the physical, the economic and the imagined.

‘After they ransacked the Museum‘ is the first in a series of bronze cabinets, the designs of which are influenced by the ‘Arab Spring’ uprisings. Inspired by the loss of structures and historical artefacts, Davis created the bronze cupboard that appears to be broken and fractured. Some of Davis’ other work is slightly less sinister however and pieces like the high kick stool and the low table portray more of a feeling of movement, spirit and playfulness. Sensational Scrapwood Furniture by Piet Hein Eek. Piet Hein Eek is a Dutch designer best known for his scrapwood furniture range that he creates using scraps of reclaimed wood. Each piece of beautiful, timeless and unique furniture is lovingly hand-crafted by Eek and is designed and made to last. Eek first started producing furniture from reclaimed materials in 1990 when he designed and made the scrapwood cupboard as a reaction against the prevalent craving for flawlessness. According to Eek he wanted to show that products that aren’t perfect can still appeal to our sense of aestetic and functionality.

He also wanted to design a product that could be made with limited means and a material that was abundant. Over the years, Eek has become very adept at seeing materials and techniques that are available for design, but that are not being used for that purpose. He sees the value in materials that others would perhaps class as waste and he transforms them into surprisingly efficient and lasting pieces of furniture. The Cutline furniture collection by Alessandro Busanas | XZQT. Super Space-Saving Furniture by Boxetti. For most people, particularly those of us who live in relatively small homes, the search for the perfect furniture is not an easy one. It has to be the right material, the right colour, the right shape and most importantly it has to be the right size. Space is at a premium in our overcrowded world and if there is one thing that many modern homes lack it has to be space.

However, one extremely clever designer from Latvia has come up with a solution that makes the most out of furniture without taking up most of the space. Designed by Rolands Landsbergs, Boxetti is an innovative system that places functionality, advanced technologies and the contemporary aesthetics of minimalism at the top of its priority list. Each of the Boxetti modules is designed to achieve maximum efficiency and to meet our modern demands for functionality and suitability. The Boxetti Lounge unit features a three-seater couch with removable blocks that become occasional tables. Art Deco Inspired Secret Desk with a Twist by Magdalena Tekieli [Video] Do you remember the Accordion-inspired office we posted a while back on Freshome? Well, here is another similar design that caught our attention. Envisioned by Magdalena Tekieli, Secret Desk is also meant for office spaces and features a clever “mechanism” of hiding objects inside.

Characterized by gravity (another word for work efficiency), the desk is able to fold and unfold, depending to the items it stores. But no matter how much this furniture piece changes its appearance, the overall visual effect it offers is that of elegance. Made of wood and leather, the desk also comes with a few cute drawers, perfect for writing instruments, also able to “disappear” inside the accordion-inspired addition. The designer explains that the simple, geometric forms and precious materials used to build the escritoire are a reference to the Art Deco style.

Have a look at the well-made film below for some great details of the project and tell us what you think! Experimental Furniture Hybrid Shaped Of Wood And Textile. Exemplary designs come from venturing into different fields, connecting design dots and composing never before-seen pieces. Experimental furniture can give an in depth analysis of the interaction of its materials, as is the case with this hybrid piece of furniture imagined by Hungarian textile designer Kata Monus.

Used for storage in a unique, artistic way, this almost organic furniture item is a hybrid between the fluid dynamics of braided string and the rigid structure of the wooden boxes. The Experimental Furniture by Kata Monus display a continuous but interchangeable connection between the furniture’s parts, breaking the monotony of usual assembly. Integrating her work with textile in the furniture manufacturing field, the artist managed to create a stunning piece of modern furniture and shape a gateway towards experimenting with common materials in a surprising “out of the box” way. Walnut And Sycamore Veneer Shaping Nautilus' Perfect Proportions. Sustainable and Unconventional Furniture Items by Jory Brigham Design. Jory Brigham Design is a furniture fabrication business located in San Luis Obispo, California. For today, we decided to showcase some of the beautiful works of the person behind the company, which consists of sustainable and unconventional furniture items. The producer of these delightful projects told us that for each handcrafted piece, he strives to incorporate many styles, eras, colors, and textures.

The materials used, sometimes unconventionally, are always utilized to their fullest potential. Sustainable hardwood, concrete, and plywood are just some of the materials Jory employs in his one-of-a-kind creations. Functional Art In The Shape of Odd-Looking Furniture by Donald Fodness. We received photos and information about an interesting recycling project imagined by artist Donald Fodness. We asked the designer for a subjective description of his works and here is what he replied: “My furniture combines handcrafted wood working and metal fabricating techniques with ready-made found objects.

These pieces problem solve a desire to salvage and re-purpose common or discarded materials; this is both a conceptual exercise in un-labeling as well as a behavioral ethic. I am primarily a visual artist and my interest in making functional art objects relates to my interest in folk aesthetics. While primarily utilitarian, these furniture objects combine the constraint of aesthetically integrating a disparate form that transplants or embeds history and character into an otherwise newborn object. Sideboard From Motorcycle Frame, Coat Tree, and Casters For instance, the sideboard uses a motorcycle frame found on the roadside. Coffee table from a Row of Stadium Seating.

Not For Insectophobes While visiting a natural history museum, designer Jingfeng Fang got inspired when admiring a piece of wood that had been devoured by worms. For this five drawer set he used a drill to create a dynamic pattern imitating bug bites. I’m not usually for something made to look “old” or weathered but this interesting and humorous design evokes the imagination of a past event with distinctive storytelling. Designer: Jingfeng Fang. Animorfia. Animorphia Did you ever see the scene in Beetlejuice with those walking, crawling, creepy chairs? They were undeniably awesome. Well these pieces won’t follow you around trying to catch you, but they are the next best thing. Though inanimate and lifeless, the Animorphia collection by Toot Chen expresses the exact opposite by exploring the stretches of the imagination and drawing from the posture motions and natural interactions of animals.

Awww, look at that cute family of wild side tables. Designer: Toot Chen. Simple and Timeless Furniture.
