Remember that fancy camera app that leaked a few weeks back? 'NBN' cable replaces rat-chewed Telstra fibre. Last week, 2GB radio host and fierce critic of the Australian government's AU$37.4 billion National Broadband Network (NBN) Ray Hadley claimed to have discovered pictures of an exposed NBN cable on the Minnamurra Bridge on the South Coast of New South Wales — only it wasn't actually NBN Co's cable, but rather Telstra's temporary fix for a cable destroyed by rats.

Yet more bad news on Australian broadband speeds. It seems that almost every week, there is yet more data demonstrating how far Australia is falling behind on broadband.

Yet more bad news on Australian broadband speeds

It's bad news for a country with such a revolutionary vision as the National Broadband Network (NBN). The latest figures collated by the OECD (released July 18) show we are eighth from the bottom of member countries for fibre and cable penetration — just 4.4 per 100 inhabitants, compared to 36.5 in Korea and more than 18 in the US and Canada. Nokia: Microsoft Must Evolve to Make Windows Phone a Success

Last week Nokia reported record smartphone sales of 7.4 million Lumia devices. While this is admirable, it is but a drop in the ocean compared to the likes of Samsung and Apple who shipped over 70 million and over 30 million smartphones respectively in the same period. While Nokia is doing better than some other big name brands in the smartphone market, the problem is that Nokia was the king of mobile phones for 14 years, and being an also-ran just isn't good enough. The problem is the Finnish company has thrown all its eggs into Microsoft's Windows Phone basket and is now forever tied to a mobile operating system which is playing catch up.

Apple looks at another screen size change to match Samsung. Samsung's broader range of screen sizes is credited with increasing its market share. Picture: Supplied Source: Supplied APPLE could roll out smartphones and tablets with bigger screens in a move analysts say is an attempt to catch up with a trend set by its major rival Samsung. The Californian tech giant and its Asian suppliers are testing smartphone screens larger than four inches (10.16 centimetres) and tablet screens slightly less than 13 inches (33 centimetres), the Wall Street Journal reported, without naming the suppliers. Samsung, which has released a series of handsets and tablets with increasingly larger screens, has seen its global market share rise as consumers flock to their products putting Apple under pressure to follow suit.

The paper said it was not clear if such designs would ever make their way onto the market, but analysts said smartphones with bigger displays are increasingly popular because they meet the needs of users. Kickstarter project developing micro plasma thrusters to send CubeSats on interplanetary missions. CubeSats are one of the wonders of our day. They allow projects with small budgets and smaller equipment to access low Earth orbit (LEO) at achievable costs. Seeing greater potential for these miniaturized modular satellites, Professor Benjamin Longmire of the University of Michigan is heading a team to install a miniature plasma thruster system into a 3U CubeSat, enabling the vehicle to leave LEO and cruise much of the Solar System.

Source: Supplied SAMSUNG claimed another victory in the global smartphone war today, with statistics showing its phones have overtaken Apple iPhones in web use for the first time. After a tough battle over the past year, Samsung narrowly edged out its major rival just last month, according to web analytics firm StatCounter, which measured traffic to more than three million websites for its internet Wars Report: Winners and Losers. Samsung's win was a slender one, however, with Samsung phone users making up 25.47 per cent of mobile phone web traffic, beating Apple and its iPhone army on 25.09 per cent.

Both companies beat last year's winner, Nokia, which dropped from 28.05 per cent of phone web traffic to just 21.96 per cent, followed by BlackBerry on just 3.62 per cent. Bruce Lee 'brought back to life' for Johnnie Walker ad.
