Collections: Libraries & Archives: Finding Aids. Finding aids are guides to the collections of records housed in the Museum Archives. These guides provide a historical or biographical note about the creator of the records, which could be a department or an individual curator. They also describe the intellectual organization of the records and provide listings of the folders with brief descriptions of the materials in these folders.

Our finding aids are organized into three areas: curators' collections, departmental records, and artist and donor collections. Curators' Collections The Guide to the Culin Archival Collection (1871–1933) Stewart Culin (1858–1929) was the Brooklyn Museum's first curator of ethnology and an early expert in anthropology. A Guide to the Culin Archival Collection provides a chronology of Culin's life, a detailed description of the collection, as well as a bibliography of publications written by Culin. Powered by Millennium. Cataloguers, step into the limelight « Thing blogging. I have always said that if librarians as a profession struggle with their public image and with public understanding of what they do, then cataloguers are the librarians of the library world. When people talk about the “echo chamber“, where librarians need to talk to the wider public rather than to each other, I can’t help but think that cataloguers are stuck within their own little bubble inside that echo chamber, mainly talking to other cataloguers. So, for a long time now, I’ve been interested in promoting cataloguing and cataloguers within our profession, to other librarians and information professionals. Biddy Fisher talked about library advocacy and the role of “cat & class” within the new heart of the library profession in her keynote speech at the CIG conference in September (the powerpoint slides are available here).

It was a subject that came up a lot in general discussion, over tea, at dinner during the conference. See Venessa’s call to arms on her blog. Like this: Cataloguers! We are changing….let’s tell everyone how and why « Scarlettlibrarian's Blog. So, I’ve got my plan all sorted and I’ve finally decided to do something about it: Its time to round up the troops (thats you!) And do some PROACTIVE ADVOCACY for cataloguing and metadata.

Working with Celine twitter@cjclib , we are putting together some action points to get us noticed, and by us I mean #Cataloguers #Catalogers – our knowledge and skills. Tweet @cjclib and @scarlettlibgirl and check out Celine’s blog Thing blogging Essentially, I hope you will join with us in ideas and thoughts, but for now, we will attempt to be visible through our blogs, Cilip CIG, the Gazette and going for the rainbow, an academic journal. Essentially we want to provoke debate internally and hopefully encourage promotion to non-cataloguers …. This is where you come in - we need examples of what you are doing to promote our skills set (if anything at all) so that we can use these in widespread promotion and advocacy for what we do.
