Photograph: Sky Sky1's offbeat travel series with Karl Pilkington, An Idiot Abroad, returned with more than 1.3 million viewers on Friday night – half a million up on its first series debut last year. The travelogue, in which a largely offscreen Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant send their long-time sparring partner Pilkington to the far flung corners of the world, had 1.33 million viewers, a 5.8% share of the audience between 9pm and 10pm on Friday. An Idiot Abroad was by some distance the most watched pay-TV show on Friday and was virtually neck and neck with ITV2's The X Factor USA (1.359 million/6.6% – including ITV2 +1) as the biggest show across all multichannel programming. The show was 427% up on Sky1's average audience for the slot over the last three months and a big leap up from the 821,000 who watched the show's original launch on 23 September last year.

An Idiot Abroad is a British travel documentary/road trip comedy television series broadcast on Sky 1, as well as a series of companion books published by Canongate Books,[1] created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant and starring Karl Pilkington.[2] The ongoing theme of both the television series and the books is that Pilkington has no interest in global travel, so Merchant and Gervais make him travel while they stay in the United Kingdom and monitor his progress.[2][3] Overview[edit] Originally entitled Karl Pilkington's Seven Wonders of the World,[4] An Idiot Abroad documents Karl Pilkington's journeys to foreign countries under the guise of visiting the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Though the New Seven Wonders of the World include the Colosseum in Rome, this is not one of Pilkington's destinations; instead he visits the Great Pyramids in Egypt (which is the last of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World to remain intact).
