Behind the Iron Curtain: An Abandoned Tour of the Eastern Bloc

Litchfield’s journey took her through ten countries in Eastern Europe to capture what was left from the collapse of the Soviet Union. The result was Soviet Ghosts, a fascinating 192-page hardcover photo book with essays and articles sprinkled throughout. In an extensive blog post, Litchfield recalls: “For me the place that had most impact on me emotionally was Chernobyl, I have visited many abandoned buildings, some of which have affected me deeply and emotionally. But never had I encountered a whole town, which had been devastated by disaster to such a degree. a3d360e_460s.jpg (JPEG Image, 460 × 343 pixels) Ferreiros do Dao Map - Portugal.

The structure is built up from a varied stacking of almost 70 individual little houses, executed in four shades of the traditional green colour of the Zaan region. In the hotel’s façade, five distinct types of Zaan houses can be found, from labourers’ cottages to town houses. A striking exception is the blue corner piece, a reference to the blue house, which was the subject of a painting by the French artist Claude Monnet (1840-1926) during his stay in the Zaan region.

Ancient Builders Created Monumental Structures that Altered Sound and Mind, Say Researchers

The results of recent research suggests that ancient, or prehistoric, builders of the monumental structures found in such diverse places as Ireland, Malta, southern Turkey and Peru all have a peculiarly common characteristic -- they may have been specially designed to conduct and manipulate sound to produce certain sensory effects. Beginning in 2008, a recent and ongoing study of the massive 6,000-year-old stone structure complex known as the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum on the island of Malta, for example, is producing some revelatory results.

Like its related prehistoric temple structures on Malta, this structure features central corridors and curved chambers. But this structure is unique in that it is subterranean, created through the removal of an estimated 2,000 tons of stone carved out with stone hammers and antler picks. The Hypogeum of Paola, Malta, (Ipoġew in Maltese) literally meaning "underground" in Greek, is a subterranean structure dating to the Saflieni phase (3000-2500 BC) in Maltese prehistory. Thought to have been originally a sanctuary, it became a necropolis in prehistoric times and the remains of more than 7,000 individuals have been found.

It is the only known prehistoric underground temple in the world. The Hypogeum was depicted on a 2 cents 5 mils stamp issued in the Maltese Islands in 1980 to commemorate the acceptance by UNESCO of this unique structure in the World Heritage Site list.
