This upbeat, progressive, diverse, beach bonanza—lively with distinctive restaurants, world-class performance and fine arts venues, ace accommodations, nature-reveling diversions and shop-licious Las Olas Boulevard—has graciously grown-up, shedding its 1980s reputation as a spring-break party scene. Situated on a 23-mile-long, pristine, sandy Atlantic Ocean shoreline, Fort Lauderdale now attracts a varied bounty of vacationers: young professionals, avid foodies and mixology mavens, energetic families, sporty adventurers, romantic couples and Northeast snowbirds.

New Times Top Best New Restaurants of 2019. It's no longer a question that South Florida's restaurant scene is undergoing a renaissance.
The phenomenon has kicked into high gear in 2019, with notable new restaurants popping up everywhere from Pompano Beach to Palm Beach to Lauderhill. But whether it comes to fine-dining or fast-casual concepts, Fort Lauderdale is clearly leading the pack in culinary innovation. Half of the restaurants listed here call the largest city in Broward County home, and many of them aim to show off their skills with locally sourced and sustainable ingredients. With the year only halfway over, it stands to reason this trend will continue in the coming months. But for now, these are the best new restaurants that have opened in South Florida in 2019. Libby Vision. Miami Eaters #1 Best Happy Hour Spot in Fort Lauderdale. Venice Magazine’s Chef Dean James Max’s Story. By John Tanasychuk Photography by Felipe Cuevas It’s Thursday evening, and the 160-seat dining room at Even Keel Fish & Oyster is teeming with diners eager to sample what chef Dean James Max and his partners are offering on this modern American seafood menu.
The raw bar is a succinct representation: house-made swordfish dip, Sebastian Inlet clams, spicy wahoo poke and fresh stone crab claws. Max understands the food of Florida—seafood, vegetables, all of it—better than most South Florida chefs. That’s because he was born into the food business. His childhood, spent on a Virginia farm and then on the beaches of Stuart, gave him a respect for ingredients and the people who cultivate them. Most South Florida foodies only know him as the chef from Fort Lauderdale’s 3030 Ocean, a post he departed from in 2013 after 14 years. “South Florida’s my home,” says Max, who also opened Blue Ocean Poke in Deerfield Beach last year. 3030 Ocean was—and is—a special occasion restaurant.
