Rope. Kits. Survival Topics - Your Online Survival Kit. Free info covering all aspects of survival. Screenshot Tour: Show Us Your Go Bag - Lifehacker. My 10 year old free-from-CDW backpack (no purse, but I may go to a dual-slung messenger bag if this ever dies) holds my PowerBook, Visor Edge, mobile phone, iPod, long and short RJ-45 cables (WiFi ain't universal), power cords for the computer and iPod, sunglasses, camera with extra film (yes, film - the phone can take crappy digital pictures), assorted A/V cables, blank CDs (burned data CDs, too), small MagLite - which may be the most valuable item, notebook, pens, pencils, hi-liter (they're not high tech, but they're technology), thumb drive, and extra batteries (phone, PDA, camera, flashlight).
Non-tech includes Wintergreen Altoids, Wintermint Orbit chiclets, moist towelettes, moleskin (for my shoes, not a notebook), Band-Aids, emergency cash squirreled away (a £10 and/or $20 note), ibuprofen, antacid, Lomodil, Dramamine, a couple days of regular prescriptions, and - most important - a 500ml bottle of Diet Coke!
