Steampunk Hijacks Hi-Tech: 13 Works of Art & Design Article by Steve, filed under Drawing & Digital in the Art category. Steampunk art, fashion, design and mods are seen by some as a reaction to today’s generic, plastic gadgets that all look the same until one gets very, very close – practical yes, pleasing no. So polish up that monocle, bring on the brass and banish cookie-cutter clutter as Steampunk artists find thirteen more ingenious ways to redesign and refashion the world by hijacking hi-tech back to the future (past)! The elegant (and probably very heavy) keyboard features violet-tinted LED lighting, etched brass Acanthus leaf patterns on the sides and a cushy burgundy wrist pad. MSI NX8500GT-TD512EH GeForce 8500GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail. This review is from: MSI NX8500GT-TD512EH GeForce 8500 GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Video Card Pros: Fanless, relatively low-power, typical nvidia support (thats good), stable, no major problems, decent gaming framerates if you put some attention into it and try not to ask too much of it.

Cons: Picky: To get Consistent frame rates (FPS) in games, I had to make sure no icons in the system tray were animated or updating, because a systray display update seemed to result in a dropped frame, every time, when gaming... Once when playing a game I discovered that frame dropping was also being caused by another program (besides the game) simply reading the harddisk, once every second or two. Using filemon and procexp I was able to identify which program it was, and suspend it, and make the fps smooth again. Other Thoughts: I recommend using omega drivers vs. the official drivers (just google: download omega video drivers) Couple example games and what you'd expect: Auto-crossover NIC. What every programmer should know about memory, Part 1. September 21, 2007 This article was contributed by Ulrich Drepper [Editor's introduction: Ulrich Drepper recently approached us asking if we would be interested in publishing a lengthy document he had written on how memory and software interact.

We did not have to look at the text for long to realize that it would be of interest to many LWN readers. Memory usage is often the determining factor in how software performs, but good information on how to avoid memory bottlenecks is hard to find. This series of articles should change that situation. The original document prints out at over 100 pages.

Reformatting the text from the original LaTeX has been a bit of a challenge, but the results, hopefully, will be good. Many thanks to Ulrich for allowing LWN to publish this material; we hope that it will lead to more memory-efficient software across our systems in the near future.] 1 Introduction In the early days computers were much simpler.
