Every tweet, no matter how trivial, reveals the writer's mood, through word choice--It can be as obvious as "happy" or as subtle as "diamond." Now imagine if you could take that knowledge, scale it up to the entire Twitter-verse, and use it to gauge the entire country's mood? That's exactly what Alan Mislove, a computer scientist, at Northeastern University, did, using 300 million tweets in real time .

Back in February we reported that Selena Gomez had become the tenth member of Twitter’s 10 million club , joining other luminaries such as Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Katy Perry as Twitter profiles who could boast 10 or more million followers. Club membership is now up to 14, with Nicki Minaj, Oprah Winfrey and Ellen Degeneres all reaching 10 million followers in the past few weeks. But what about brands? Are there any brands on Twitter that can boast an eight-figure follower count? Yes, there’s one: YouTube . Unlike Facebook, where the top three most-Liked Pages are all brands (and Facebook themselves are very much at the top of the pile), when it comes to the double-edged sword of ‘most popular’, Twitter skews heavily towards individuals, with eighteen of the network’s top twenty most-followed users being celebrity profiles, and this ratio continues as you move down the table. http://www.mediabistro.com/alltwitter/top-twitter-brands_b19915

Jeremy Cole , a DBA Team Lead/Database Architect at Twitter, gave a really good talk at the O'Reilly MySQL conference: Big and Small Data at @Twitter , where the topic was thinking of Twitter from the data perspective. One of the interesting stories he told was of the transition from Twitter's old way of storing tweets using temporal sharding , to a more distributed approach using a new tweet store called T-bird, which is built on top of Gizzard , which is built using MySQL. Twitter's original tweet store:

“So here are some questions that keep me up at night: How are we to make our students literate if we ourselves are not? If we cling to age old definitions and ignore the wisdom of one of the oldest professional education organizations we have in this country, how do we provide my kids with the experiences they need to fully understand what it means to be a self-directed, participatory learner in this century? How do we make sure that every child and every teacher has access to these tools and connections? And what do we do when the reform conversations are being led by a majority of folks who have no context for the changes that are happening every day in these connected spaces, folks that by NCTE’s definition , may have some literacy issues themselves?”
