dEEP Architects have developed a design concept for the development of an art-based hotel that will be constructed just north of the Beijing National Stadium (The Bird Nest) as part of Beijing ’s “Post Olympic Commercial Strategy.” The design concept, which the architects call “A Fluid Dream,” borrows from several sources. The surrealism of Salvador Dali is a driving force of formal fluidity of the design, while the concept of a nest egg is the source of privacy for the hotel units, derived from the affectionate nickname of the nearby stadium. Read on for more on this project after the break.

The environmentally-minded designers at Barcelona firm Capella Garcia Arquitectura take the idea of “green living” to heart. Their latest project, helmed by partners Juli Capella and Miguel Garcia, reimagines and reinvents a unsightly wall left behind from a former building demolition. http://www.good.is/posts/in-barcelona-a-living-wall-is-more-than-architecture-it-s-vegitecture

Fascinating Underground Homes | JetSetta

http://jetsetta.com/travel/fascinating-underground-homes/ We received a great response from our feature on Klima Hotel (Bella Vista) , the semi-sumerged underground hote in Bozen, Italy , so we were pleased to come across 6 Fascinating Underground Homes on Inhabitat. Of course, you can’t book a stay in these places like you can a hotel, but they just might change your idea of a dream home. Green enthusiast and British football star Gary Neville’s house-to-be is hidden under the ground, save for the petal-shaped openings that flood the interior with light.

The fake houses at 23 and 24 Leinster Gardens, Bayswater, London W2 | urban75 blog

Leinster Gardens in Bayswater, London is a street with a twist, in so much that two of its houses don’t actually exist. The imposing looking properties at numbers 23 & 24 are false façades, with thin air behind the 5 feet (1.5 m) thick walls – look closely and you’ll see that the windows are in fact just painted on, and the doors have no letter boxes. I first visited the site in the 1990s, and wrote this piece in Jan 2007 about this quirky London oddity: http://www.urban75.org/blog/the-fake-houses-at-23-and-24-leinster-gardens-bayswater-london-w2/

The KKC House is a two-section raised home that is bisected by an extension of the plot around it. A green staircase rises from the back yard in continuation of the children’s playground, where mini-golf and kids games can be enjoyed within the view of parents.

http://www.cracktwo.com/2011/04/25-abandoned-soviet-monuments-that-look.html These structures were commissioned by former Yugoslavian president Josip Broz Tito in the 1960s and 70s to commemorate sites where WWII battles took place (like Tjentište, Kozara and Kadinjača), or where concentration camps stood (like Jasenovac and Niš). They were designed by different sculptors (Dušan Džamonja, Vojin Bakić, Miodrag Živković, Jordan and Iskra Grabul, to name a few) and architects (Bogdan Bogdanović, Gradimir Medaković...), conveying powerful visual impact to show the confidence and strength of the Socialist Republic. In the 1980s, these monuments attracted millions of visitors per year, especially young pioneers for their "patriotic education." After the Republic dissolved in early 1990s, they were completely abandoned, and their symbolic meanings were forever lost.

On Wednesday architect Tom Kundig -- of Seattle-based Olson Kundig Architects -- spoke at the New York Public Library , conversing with Town & Country editor Mark Rozzo about Tom Kundig: Houses 2 , published by Princeton Architectural Press . In the lecture portion of the evening Kundig spoke about his inspirations, ranging from his architect-father to the landscape of eastern Washington state where he grew up and even hot rodding. In line with the DIY mechanics of the latter is Jean Tinguely's fountain in Basel, what Kundig described as straddling the "thin line between highbrow and lowbrow art." See for yourself: The aspect of Kundig's architecture that these kinetic sculptures influence is obviously the moving walls and other elements found especially in his residences.
