Along with projection choice and scale options, design and colors have a huge impact on how well, and to who, the map will carry the appropriate message.

The Hidden Meanings of Maps: Design and Colors

As for all the mapping elements, the way the cartographer chooses to present the data (design, colors) tells a lot about his very interpretation of the mapped phenomena. What are the options offered to the cartographer in terms of design and color to build a good map? Let’s review some basics about design options, data set, colors conventions and then have a look at a map gallery from the media to reveal their hidden meanings. The Land of Coding. Somewhere in the past few decades, cartographers have lost the control of cartography.

The Land of Coding

How could this happen? Can we get it back? This past fall, I co-taught an introductory GIS and Cartography class in a department of future urban planners. Many great questions were brought up and discussed through the duration of the course, some I would hear more than others. Two of the biggest questions were often in tandem. Perhaps the most important professional attribute one can have in our modern society is the ability to learn and pick up new technologies quickly. To an extremely visual person, learning to code can be a tough task. Much to my dismay, and unfortunately to the huge detriment of the field, geographers, and specifically cartographers, have been slow to embrace coding. In many professions, coding is a buzzword, but to those in the spatial industry, be it geography, visualization, planning, or whatever, get yourself in the proper paradigm to carry the field into the future.

U.S. high-speed rail map: Artist Alfred Twu's alternate reality. Illustration by Alfred Twu In the real world, President Obama's grand plans for a national high-speed rail system sputtered out in the face of Republican opposition.

U.S. high-speed rail map: Artist Alfred Twu's alternate reality.

But in the alternate world depicted by graphic artist Alfred Twu, we've realized them all, and more. The map above depicts Twu's vision of an America whose major cities are all connected by state-of-the-art, 220 mph trains. His map isn't strictly based on the Obama administration's actual plans, shown here. It's far more ambitious than that. 9873C2E2-67C6-4ECD-BAAA-2147433219AA_mw1024_n_s.jpg (Image JPEG, 640x360 pixels) The Land Of Maps: Photo. Multivariate Map Symbols. September 10, 2013 by John Krygier In the field of sociology, perhaps one of the most useful devices for the graphic presentation of facts is the cartogram or statistical map.

Multivariate Map Symbols

Recently there has been an increasing emphasis on the ecological and statistical phases of social analysis. This development has given the map much greater significance and utility in the methodology of sociology. The chief value of the spot-map, though not highly refined or developed at present, seems to be that of an instrument of social discovery and analysis. Significant relations and correspondence of variables, which might otherwise be overlooked, are brought into graphic relief by the spotmap. This Man Has Spent 30 Years Mapping the Imaginary Land of Ukrania - Wired Science. It started one day in 1963 when he reached the edge of the page.

Jerry Gretzinger had been doodling, drawing carefully cross-hatched squares to represent buildings, adding streets and rivers and train stations. And then the page was filled, and he taped another one on and kept going. “That’s when I realized this thing had a life of its own,” Jerry said in a 2010 video documentary. For 20 years, a map grew from his imagination, page by page, city by city, farm by farm. He put the project down in 1983. I truly cannot get over the result.
