The little of visualisation design: Part 4. The Data Visualisation Catalogue. Medialab.github. This map visualizes human activity in cities around the World. Last year the number of active mobile phones crossed the level 7.22 billion, while the number of people is estimated at the level of 7.2 billion.
It basically means that there are more mobile devices than human beings and that statistically everyone in the world owns a mobile phone. What we are not fully aware of, is that each phone call, text message, and each movement of our device creates a huge amount of data. Twitter’s Data Editor Highlights Challenges and Possibilities With more than 500 million tweets sent every day, Twitter data as a whole can seem huge and unimaginable, like cramming the contents of the Library of Congress into your living room.
One way of trying to make that big data understandable is by making it smaller and easier to handle by giving it context; by putting it on a map. We Tweet As We Live This map by @miguelrios shows billions of those geotagged tweets on a map. The coolest thing? Dashboards by Keen IO. In 1760, some fifteen hundred enslaved black men and women— perhaps fewer but probably many more— took advantage of Britain’s Seven Year’s War against France and Spain, to stage a massive uprising in Jamaica, which began on April 7 in the windward parish of St.
Mary’s and continued in the leeward parishes until October of the next year. Over the course of eighteen months the rebels killed as many as sixty whites and destroyed many thousands of pounds worth of property. During the suppression of the revolt over five hundred black men and women were killed in battle, executed, or committed suicide. Another 500 were transported from the island for life. Tweetping. Take millions of data points, each one a geolocated entry plucked from a digitised collection of 18th- and 19th-century ships’ logs (1), pin them all on a blank canvas, and you get this extraordinary world map.
This map may have been featureless to begin with, yet we can clearly discern the contours of the continents. That is the cumulative effect of significant numbers of coast-hugging vessels, generating enough data points to reveal the length and breadth of the land. But some contours are notably absent: the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, the eastern half of the Mediterranean, the Black Sea, the northern shores of Siberia, Canada and Australia. Graphics Processors Speed Up Twitter Visualizations. New software can use the graphics processors found on everyday computers to process torrents of data more quickly than is normally possible, opening up new ways to visually explore everything from Twitter posts to political donations.
Known as MapD, or massively parallel database, the new technology achieves big speed gains by storing the data in the onboard memory of graphics processing units (GPUs) instead of in central processing units (CPUs), as is conventional. Using a single high-performance GPU card can make data processing up to 70 times faster. Right now the prototype technology is being demonstrated on tweets; it can show how a meme is propagating in real time on regional or world maps (watch “Visualizing Big Data in Milliseconds on Cheap Computers”). This is a look at 3 billion tweets - every geotagged tweet since September 2011, mapped, showing facets of Twitter’s ecosystem and userbase in incredible new detail, revealing demographic, cultural, and social patterns down to city level detail, across the entire world.
We were brought in by the data team at Gnip, who have awesome APIs and raw access to the Twitter firehose, and together Tom and data artist Eric Fischer used our open source tools to visualize the data and build interfaces that let you explore the stories of space, language, and access to technology. This is big data, and there’s a significant level of geographic overlap between tweets, so Eric wrote an open-source tool that de-duplicated 2.7 billion overlapping datapoints, leaving 280 million unique locations. see the full screen Locals and Tourists site. Cartography and Geovisualization Group, Oregon State University. Beautiful new biodiversity maps color-coded to show hotspots. Guest Post by Clinton Jenkins The variety of life on Earth is not spread evenly, but is concentrated in very special places.
SavingSpecies has been working to map the diversity of vertebrate life across the world and thereby identify the very best places where we can protect and restore the most biodiversity for the buck. These beautiful new maps, seen here for the first time, illustrate some of the intriguing patterns of life in the world. As well as being gorgeous images of life’s diversity, the maps help us use science to prioritize our conservation efforts.

Every single geotagged tweet since 2009 was mapped by Visual Insights team at Twitter. Every dot represents a tweet, with the brighter colours showing a higher concentration of tweets. Watch_Dogs WeareData. Visualized Flight Paths of the World. Have you ever wondered how the civil planes’ routes look like? I, for instance, find this matter quite interesting, so I decided to find out how this stuff actually works. In order to get a picture, I’ve been collecting plane tracking data from Planefinder.net during the whole month of October in 2012.
The results of such monitoring amounted for about 1 billion “dots” which I tried to put on a map. Since such data tends to be somewhat discrete and it won’t allow to you to build personal routes for each plane, I decided to leave these dots as they are. MapBox: Locals & Tourists. StreetArtApps.
