By Jeffrey R. Young The most popular educator on YouTube does not have a Ph.D. He has never taught at a college or university. And he delivers all of his lectures from a bedroom closet. This upstart is Salman Khan, a 33-year-old who quit his job as a financial analyst to spend more time making homemade lecture videos in his home studio. "My single biggest goal is to try to deliver things the way I wish they were delivered to me," he told me recently. The resulting videos don't look or feel like typical college lectures or any of the lecture videos that traditional colleges put on their Web sites or YouTube channels. The lo-fi videos seem to work for students, many of whom have written glowing testimonials or even donated a few bucks via a PayPal link. S Mobile Yard Tour app. Harvard University is commemorating its 375th anniversary this year with a special gift — a mobile tour of Harvard Yard for visitors, neighbors, and members of the Harvard community. With any web-enabled smartphone, the Harvard Mobile Yard Tour app allows users to take a self-guided tour to learn more about the University’s rich history as they explore Harvard Yard.

For example, users will learn which Harvard building housed George Washington and his troops during the Revolutionary War, view colonial artifacts dug from the Yard by archaeology students, and see how the University is using technology to make its collections accessible to anyone with a computer. Users will also hear from students on what it’s like to live in Massachusetts Hall, view President Drew Faust’s office, and learn the history of the wooden water pump in the Yard. Though the walking tour is intended for users located in the Yard, the app can also be downloaded from any location for a remote tour experience. Harvard's Channel.

A More Accurate, Transparent Klout Score. A More Accurate, Transparent Klout Score October 26th, 2011 by Ash Rust Today we’re releasing a new scoring model with insights to help you understand changes in your influence. This project represents the biggest step forward in accuracy, transparency and our technology in Klout’s history.

Joe shared the full vision behind these changes in his post last week. Influence is the ability to drive action and is based on quality, not quantity. When someone engages with your content, we assess that action in the context of the person’s own activity. How many people you influence, how much you influence them andhow influential they are. We analyze 2.7 billion pieces of content and connections daily. Insights help you understand why your Score changed. These changes are a significant milestone in the Klout Score’s evolution and you can continue to expect more improvements in the future. How will this affect my Score?

Miami Hurricanes Social Media Day/Q&A with Chris Freet February 18, 2011 by Claude Clayborne Today, the University of Miami will hold the FIRST EVER “SOCIAL MEDIA DAY” where the athletic department at UM will solely communicate with its fan base through social media. Miami will be the first college athletics department to “shutdown” its official website for a full business day and communicate solely through social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, UStream, and YouTube for an unprecedented 14 hours of live chats with Hurricane coaches and standout student-athletes.

Personally, I think this is one of most brilliant and trend setting moves I have seen in some time. This is what could be the “forward pass” in relation to athletic departments and social networking. In two years, I think this type of communication will be a full-time platform for all athletic departments and the new standard for colleges across the country.
