40) For Emma - Bon Iver. A DIGITAL ROLLING STONE. Spotify Already "Paying Out Well" to Record Labels. Music-streaming service Spotify has yet to launch in the U.S., but in Europe the service is already reportedly offering a sustainable revenue stream to the labels it's made licensing deals with, according to the Telegraph. SVP of Digital for Universal Music Group International Rob Wells revealed some of the financial details of the licensing agreements it has with Spotify for the first time.
In the UK and Spain, Spotify pays a per stream royalty for each track users listen to. In its other four territories (France, Sweden, Finland and Norway), the labels instead get a cut of the revenue generated from subscriptions and advertising. "That to me equates to a sustainable business model," said Wells.
Spotify only needs a 10-12% conversion rate of free to paid users in any given territory to give the labels a decent return. Wells also revealed that Spotify was the fourth largest digital partner in terms of revenue contribution in 2009. A world of music. In Bb 2.0 - a collaborative music/spoken word project. Following on the heels of established Icelandic musicians such as Björk, Sigur Rós, Múm, GusGus and others, Ólafur Arnalds is the latest talent to emerge from this somewhat unlikely North Atlantic sonic hub. Arnalds’s ambitious and confident debut album, Eulogy For Evolution, was released in 2007 when he was just 21. A mix of classical instrumentation and indie rock, the album garnered widespread acclaim for its savvy blending of influences and Arnalds’s obvious precocity.
After an equally compelling follow-up EP, Variations of Static (2008), Arnalds embarked on a more experimental project, which involved creating a new song every day for a week, and then immediately making it available online at foundsongs.erasedtapes.com. The project, called Found Songs, earned attention by making use of social-networking tools such as Facebook, Twitter and Flickr (on which Arnalds ran a forum/competition for corresponding artwork).
