France - Statistiques de consommation. DATASTORY // Google buys Nest. Google announced this week its acquisition of Nest for 3,2 billion dollars, the startup specialized in home automation, which produces connected thermostats and smart smoke alarms. This is a big opportunity for Google. The American company founded in 2010 by two former Apple employees, Matt Rogers and Tony Fadell (one of the fathers that gave birth to iPod), confirms in Forbes that it has already sold about 1 million of thermostats. After acquiring Motorola Mobility (12,5 billion dollars) and DoubleClick, we might ask the question: what is hided behind Google’s acquisition strategy?

What is Google looking for beyond the Nest acquisition? Google enters a thriving market, the market of home automation and connected homes.

Désagrégation de charge

Disaggregated Homes: September 2011. Accurately comparing the performance of energy disaggregation (Non-intrusive Appliance Load Monitoring) methods is almost impossible unless the same test data is used. For this reason, a team at MIT have built The Reference Energy Disaggregation Data Set (REDD). A few weeks ago, an initial (v1.0) snapshot of this data set was released for use in academic work. The paper describing the equipment used for data collection is: Kolter JZ, Johnson MJ. REDD : A Public Data Set for Energy Disaggregation Research. In: Workshop on Data Mining Applications in Sustainability (SIGKDD). San Diego, CA; 2011 The dataset contains data for 6 houses. The current and voltage of the two mains circuits are monitored at 15kHz. Collecting energy consumption data is a time consuming and expensive process. Energy Breakdown The aim of energy disaggregation methods is often to maximise the disaggregation accuracy, or minimise the difference between the predicted and actual energy consumption of each appliance.

Disaggregated Homes: NIALM in industry. Since the Pittsburgh workshop I've learnt a lot about industry's perspective of NIALM. Academic work is often criticised for solving simplified problems, and I believe it's important to understand what our friends in industry believe to be the real-world problems. This post is meant to list the companies I'm aware of that are working in this field, and summarise their approach to energy disaggregation. As always, please leave a comment or drop me an email if you know of any inaccuracies or omissions.

AlertMe, Cambridge, UK AlertMe is a company focusing on household monitoring for energy reduction and security purposes. Bidgely, (formerly MyEnerSave), CA, USA Bidgely is a meter-agnostic cloud-based electricity disaggregation company focused generating actionable appliance-level feedback from second to minute level aggregate power data.

Energy Aware, Vancouver, BC, Canada Energy Aware recently raised Kickstarter funding to develop their electricity disaggregation technology Neurio.
