In an Age of Self-Promotion, Celebrating the Invisibles - David Zweig

Morgan Neville’s“Twenty Feet From Stardom”, a contender in the Best Documentary Feature category, is an examination of pop music’s backup singers, and launches its subjects, at least briefly, into the limelight. These artists have made crucial contributions to the oeuvres of some of the biggest names in music – The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Luther Vandross – but to most fans are completely anonymous. While the press has made much hay, and rightfully so, about these talented singers finally getting their due, what hasn’t been emphasized is the film’s message about the nobility in doing unseen work. I’ve spent the past two years interviewing and meeting with “invisible” professionals like this film’s stars.
