As a shooting spree in Kansas shines a spotlight on extremist ideology and its virulent nature, Tara McKelvey goes back to the scene of the crime, in the city where she grew up, to find out. It was a hot afternoon at the Hillbilly Gas Station in Marionville, Missouri, and a train whistled in the distance. An American flag hanging on a pole was frayed and worn, and one of the gas pumps was broken. New NSA 'Transparency Report' Raises More Questions Than It Answers. For years, big Internet companies like Twitter have released "transparency reports" to show users how often the government asks for their data. Now the National Security Agency is getting in on the act: The agency released its first-ever such report on Friday, complete with Internet-ready charts meant to show its use of "national security authorities. " But the report, produced by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence on the orders of President Barack Obama as a response to Edward Snowden's leaks, still leaves a lot unsaid -- and the numbers it does disclose may conceal more than they reveal.
"This report is inherently untrustworthy," said Amie Stepanovich, senior policy counsel at the digital rights group Access. "Every number in this report could be significantly smaller than it actually is, or be changed in order to protect what the intelligence community would call their methods and sources. " "How do you get almost 90,000 targets with one order? " Wal-Mart 'edits' a New York Times op-ed. 23 June 2014Last updated at 16:57 ET What in the world? Pieces of global opinion A review of the best commentary on and around the world... Today's must-read The battle between muckracking columnists and the big corporations they target just took a peculiar turn.
Our story begins with New York Times writer Timothy Egan blasting Wal-Mart for not paying their employees a living wage. "As long as the Supreme Court says that corporations are citizens, they may as well act like them," he writes. "Wal-Mart, the nation's top private employer and the world's largest public corporation, is a big part of the problem," he writes. Here's where things get interesting. Not only did Mr Tovar offer his differing perspective on Egan's argument, he also corrected the numbers and grammar, and even provided alternative sources and a follow-up story idea. "Better idea for a piece," he comments. Could this somewhat unusual display of public relations become the norm? Iraq Russia Brazil Egypt. London property empire amassed by controversial German landlord | UK news.
A German landlord with a reputation for shabby buildings and disgruntled tenants has emerged as one of the biggest investors in London property in recent years. Henning Conle, 70, has snapped up almost £2bn of prime real estate, including a series of historic buildings in central London, raising inevitable questions about where he got his money from. The portfolio includes buildings that house department stores such as Liberty and House of Fraser, the Kensington Roof Gardens complex, the London offices of Manchester United and the art deco Shell Mex House on the Strand.
Until now, little has been known about Conle and the Luxembourg-registered Sirosa company he uses. When the Shell Mex deal was concluded for a reported £610m last year, press reports identified the buyer as a German family named "Conley", a typing error that inadvertently helped to disguise the owner. Conle has a somewhat tarnished reputation in his native land, where he is thought to own more than 10,000 properties.

For months, the 27-year-old web designer has begged the cable and Internet company to fix the slow and spotty broadband connection to his Murfreesboro, Tenn., home. He has resorted to using his iPhone as a hotspot or visiting a local cafe in order to work. He estimates he's lost between $500 and $1,000 in business because of time spent dealing with Internet outages. "I don't know where to turn," he said. Comcast is in the midst of a campaign to convince Congress and regulators that its $45 billion takeover of Time Warner Cable poses no threat to competition, and that the deal will actually benefit current customers of both companies.
On Wednesday, David Cohen, Comcast's executive vice president, told the Senate Judiciary Committee that the deal will allow the company to ramp up its offerings and boost Internet speed for millions of customers. But some current Comcast customers are skeptical of the deal. A Yelp review of Comcast. South Dakota Moves To Legalize Killing Abortion Providers. Dark Money in the 2012 Election | Politics & Government. In the three years since Citizens United burst the dam on political spending by corporations, businesses have been flooding elections with cool, influential cash.
Much of this money has remained secret, as corporations have eschewed donating through SuperPACs, which are required to disclose donors, in favor of channeling their money through opaque nonprofit entities, known as 501(c)(4)s, which can conceal donors' identities. But now, thanks to recently released tax returns, we are beginning to learn just who some of the dark-money princes were in 2012 and how much money they spent. As the returns reveal, business interests were very busy during that election, quietly underwriting potent partisan activities that, more often than not, benefited Republicans. Among the biggest dark-money players was Americans for Prosperity, which dumped $122 million into various election and advocacy efforts. Tags: investigative journalism, investigative journalism.
