And forget about good pasta, we’re making great pasta. Great pasta dishes start with great pasta though. I often make my own, but spaghetti and I don’t get along that well fresh. Any way, what I’m getting at here is, when you’re making a show-stopper of a pasta dish, and one that isn’t laden down with a heavy sauce, spend the extra couple of bucks at the grocery store if you can to buy a better brand of dry pasta. Not exactly romantic in the, ahem, classical sense. In fact, I’m still trying to sort through exactly how he convinced me that that would be a worthwhile use of my day. But, it did give us plenty of time to talk, and talk and talk and talk. About literature, our personal histories and scandals, politics, friends, hopes and aspirations. Good stuff. He learned about me that I have trouble telling apart left and right, probably due to a brain lesion that I somehow acquired without even realizing it. I learned about him that he considered himself a connoisseur of macaroni and cheese. In fact, he explained, he was a member of a gourmet macaroni and cheese appreciation club. It was simple – er, I mean gourmet – but it felt like a special moment for all of its low-key-ness, its comfortable familiarity. Like this: - StumbleUpon. This pancake recipe is the result of mixing and matching different recipes from many different sources. It is the result of trying and failing so many times, that I almost declared pancakes as the one breakfast recipe I couldn’t master. But I persisted, and this recipe is perfect – as perfect as a pancakes recipe can be, because making pancakes does involve frying, and frying is something that each of us needs to play with.

It changes depending on your type of stove (gas or electric), on how hot the skillet is, and on how evenly hot you manage to keep it while frying multiple batches. But the instructions here are as close as it gets to “perfect,” and the result? Spaghetti and Meatball Pot Pie - StumbleUpon. Remember those meatballs I made for a “special idea” on Friday? Here is that idea, Spaghetti and Meatball Pot Pie. I took the concept and figured if pizza was a good pot pie, then spaghetti and meat balls would be too. This isn't as much a recipe as it is a process. I started by greasing the inside of ramekins (1 cup sized, 3 1/2” in diameter). Next I add in two of the meatballs and sauce. Top that with some vermicelli that had been tossed in the sauce too. Another piece of cheese. For the crust, we made one order of our standard pizza dough and then cut out 3 1/2” circles. I rolled those out a little bigger and then pressed them over the top of the ramekins.

Since I wanted the crust to be reminiscent of garlic bread, I made a glaze of butter, roasted garlic, parsley and thyme. I fired up Alexis' Big Green Egg to 450f and set it up in “convection oven” mode with the plate setter legs down. I baked the pot pies on a pizza stone on the plate setter. About 15 minutes in, they started to brown. The best new recipes from Doughmesstic | punchfork.com. Peppermint Bark Beyond Christmas trees and lights, what screams Christmas more than candy canes? They’re a seasonal treat that traditionally are very festive in their colors and flavor. Ah, peppermint … delicious! I won’t get into all of the new candy cane varieties out there. None top the traditional red and white peppermint variety – none! So what’s better than candy canes? In my search for new holiday items to try and share, I came across peppermint bark. Beyond the flavor and layers I was wondering just how people were getting such clean lines for their bark. It’s not the typical way to make bark but I think it’s so pretty and even more festive. Calzone! - StumbleUpon. Uh-oh…this calzone shouldn’t be a calzone. Nope. It totally should be a picture of a pizza…topped with layers of ricotta, melted mozzarella, cubes of roasted butternut squash and broccoli rabe. That was the plan. This pizza was supposed to convince me that broccoli rabe isn’t this gross, bitter leaf situation…well that failed. I tried. I did. I blanched it, I sauteed it with garlic, seasoned it…even paired it with something like the butternut squash to offset its disgustingness. I was gonna post it anyway, thinking some of you lunatics actually might like it…but I dunno…looking at the pictures of the pizza bummed me out, so I decided to turn the leftover ingredients (from the pizza) into something more awesome!!

Meet this calzone… Have you ever noticed that Taco Bell works with, like, 10 ingredients. And then they just re-invent different burrito crunches, XXL chalupas, etc. with those same ingredients–it’s pretty genius. Calzones remind me of those taco bell inventions. I think classier. Candy Cane Blossoms. Too darn cute. I am the first to admit that I am a sucker for cute packaging and anything "Holiday themed" as evidenced in earlier posts. I saw these candy can kisses hit my local CVS right after Halloween. Normally I would have made some gripe about it being too early to put out Christmas Candy, but since they were so cute, I bought a bag and put it in my pantry to be saved until today.

How cute are these cookies? Could they be more festive? I just love them. I made my own colored sugar which is much more affordable than buying it. UPDATE: I posted this recipe again with a few additional tips and sprinkle ideas. Candy Cane Blossoms 1 bag Hershey;s Kisses brand Candy Cane Kisses 1/2 cup butter, softened 1 cup granulated sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 egg 2 cups all purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 2 tablespoons milk Red and Green colored sugar Preheat over to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Beat butter, sugar, vanilla, and egg in large bowl until well blended. GET OFF YOUR BUTT AND BAKE!: PASTRY - StumbleUpon.

Last night, I decided to make one of my favorite cookies. These little pastry swirls are so delish! I usually use my favorite pie crust recipe, which I have previously posted, but I decided to try a pastry recipe by the Barefoot Contessa. This recipe calls for lots of butter! I used my 14-cup Cuisinart Food Processor (love it) to make the pastry dough. It's so easy in a food processor, so if you haven't invested in one, do so very soon! Make sure that you use only cold butter, and keep the pastry chilled. That is what makes it good and flaky. Pastry: 2 cups all purpose flour 1/4 cup granulated or superfine sugar 1/2 tsp. kosher salt 1/2 pound (2 sticks) COLD unsalted butter, diced Directions: Place the flour, sugar, and salt in the bowl of a food processor fitted with a steel blade. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Heat oven to 400 degrees.

Divide your dough into two equal parts. Keep one half covered in plastic wrap and chill in refrigerator. About 1/8" thick Roll up jelly roll style. Adventures in Dinner.
