The Outdoor Classroom @ Rhyl Primary School. Tips from Eden Project Last month, we attended excellent training in outdoor learning at the lovely rooftop garden at the Southbank.

The Outdoor Classroom @ Rhyl Primary School

Here are some of their tips: - Remember the importance of the playground in children’s lives. ‘It represents a very important part of their world’. - Use strips of foam (e.g from cut up mats for sleeping bags) for children to kneel / sit on. - Have two signals, such as a whistle (to stop everyone in an emergency) and duck call to signal the end of an activity. - Use stories as a peg onto which you can attach learning activities. - Have a Bag of Bling full of fun props – feathers, tinsel etc - You have to fill children up with memorable experiences before they can come out with creative and imaginative work. - You can write secret messages on the underside of nasturtium leaves. - As humans “we’re hard wired for nature”. - Using clay to give trees faces, moulding them to the bark. A little while ago I was doing some work with a cluster of schools in the North East of England when I came accross the most amazing climbing frame made from naturally sourced real wood.

Outdoor Play Inspiration

It turns out that it was made by a North East based company called 'Infinite Edge'. I did a brief post about them at the time. I got a lot of interests and email enquiries following that post so I have asked Infinite Edge if they would do me a guest post and here it is... Infinite Edge Playgrounds is a company built on the premise of infinite play and its wide reaching impact on learning. We are a local company tracing our roots as artists working in schools supporting teachers and enriching curriculums through the embedding of creative play. Infinite Edge is a company built from strong play ideals but founded in secure child pedagogy. Sam goes on to describe a series of highly successful projects involving limited or poorly used spaces, of which possibly the most notable project is Elmfield Nursery.

Making Outdoor Learning a Reality. Absolutely delighted to have Emily from Abundant Life Children guest posting this week, sharing her thoughts on how to create an outdoor area that allows for real quality learning.

Making Outdoor Learning a Reality

Practical Tips for Making Outdoor Learning a Reality I am one of those “outdoor education” types: championing the child’s right to be muddy, cheering unstructured time in nature, encouraging adventure, and supporting efforts to unplug. Yet, despite my utopian idea of young children busily building forts or crouching to inspect the tiny wings of a moth, actually developing a style of education that works outside is an ongoing challenge!

I grew up a city girl in Southern California. Despite what you might assume, I spent a good deal of time outside engaged in typical childhood endeavors of tree climbing and endless swinging. My mission as an early childhood educator has been to identify the critical elements of nature play and find a way to make those elements work-able in my day-to-day experience. 1. 2. 3. 4.
