As the wood breaks apart, he collects the parts and takes them into the house where he continues to work on it, until they take the shape of the nutcracker his wife loved so much, but which got burned in the fire they only barely escaped. The finished nutcracker wears a green coat, and it gives her hope that even in their high age they can start over again.
