Danglingmouse. I remember reading a six word story attributed to Ernest Hemingway, it said, “For sale: Baby shoes.

Never worn.” And that started a curious wonder for sad six word stories. Although there really is no solid proof saying that Hemingway did write the story, it is believed that he wrote it to win a bet. He challenged a few writers that he could write a six-word story that could make people cry. And he did. Because the six-word format was so good, a few other people followed in. The Old Man. The old man looks down at his hands.

The Old Man

They used to be young and strong. Now they’re thick with gastritis and covered in skin that looks and feels like old leather. He balls his fingers into a fist, ignoring the cracking sound from his joints and the pain. He is determinant, he will finish what he started and with a deep breath he lifts the heavy hammer, swings it over his head and lets it crush down onto the splitting wedge. As the wood breaks apart, he collects the parts and takes them into the house where he continues to work on it, until they take the shape of the nutcracker his wife loved so much, but which got burned in the fire they only barely escaped. The finished nutcracker wears a green coat, and it gives her hope that even in their high age they can start over again.
