AT&T Using APIs to Create a Channel in the Cloud | Bridge Metrics. One of the primary attributes of cloud computing is to allow customers to service their own IT needs. But when those customers are actually your channel partners you need to find the most frictionless way to partner with each other. In the case of AT&T that means turning the entire company into a platform through which interactions and transactions are increasingly automated via a standard set of application programming interfaces (APIs). Speaking at the recent API Strategy and Practice conference in New York, Laura Merling, vice president of ecosystems and solutions at AT&T, described how AT&T plans to transform itself from essentially being a “black box” into an open platform that is transparent to all its business partners.

Known as AT&T Partner Exchange, this new AT&T program opens AT&T’s APIs to allow solution providers to develop their own customized solutions that leverage AT&T systems, processes, and tools. Merling admits this is a multi-year effort. T Opens the Innovation Doors to Solution Providers | AT. AT&T has gone all in with solution providers serving business customers. The company today announced a new program and organization to help solution providers attract new customers, grow sales and innovate in collaboration with AT&T. AT&T expects the new program, AT&T Partner Exchange, to expand and enhance current relationships with over 700 solution providers, to attract new ones, and to pursue billions of dollars in revenue opportunities. The targeted solution providers are information technology (IT) consulting and services experts who create and deliver complete solutions to businesses by combining the technologies and products of disparate vendors with industry-specific know-how.

AT&T is opening up its application programming interfaces (APIs) to allow solution providers to develop their own customized solutions for a differentiated experience. AT&T is working closely with agile and innovative solution providers to provide feedback, and test and refine the program’s processes.

AT&T details how the API program is a driver of speed in their innovation efforts: Technology forecast.

John Donovan, Sanjay Macwan, and Jacob Feinstein of AT&T detail how the API program is a driver of speed in their innovation efforts. Navigating the far-flung functional, organizational, and technical structure to bring new ideas to any large company can be slow and confounding. For a company the size of AT&T, this had the potential to create lengthy delays for developers seeking to test innovations against the network. Today, external innovators and developers access much of AT&T’s network and other capabilities in a self-service manner, allowing them to bring new offerings to market three times faster than before.

This new speed is central to AT&T’s innovation strategy. “If you have infrastructure assets and are going to operate at a pace at which the external market is moving, you have to take capabilities—industry-specific or not—and make platforms from them. The emphasis on speed extends beyond technology. APIs are the key Making AT&T addressable: Network as a platform.
