The Health Blog’s living room is getting crowded, what with all these technology companies in here trying to monitor our health.
The latest is a $250 million collaboration between Intel and GE, reported yesterday afternoon by the WSJ. The companies said the money will go for R&D on home-based health technologies over the next five years. In an announcement this morning, the companies said GE Healthcare will use its distribution muscle in the health-care sector to sell and market a system called the Intel Health Guide. The idea, in part, is to let doctors monitor the health of ill patients remotely, so the patients can remain at home. The logic behind the deal seems pretty straightforward. Intel has been working on home health for a while now, helping with the creation something called the Continua Health Alliance, which works on standards to allow medical devices and systems to exchange information. And GE is a big player in selling health IT systems.

A partnership between GE Healthcare and NBC Universal is part of GE's vision to get patients more engaged in their healthcare through a combination of IT and online content.
GE Healthcare has the clinical experience and relationships. NBC Universal has the content and consumer relationships. Between the two companies, those involved in the partnership hope to find synergies that can provide healthcare consumers with a better overall experience and better outcomes. "The media knows how to get people engaged, and that is the important part," explained Vishal Wanchoo, CEO of GE Healthcare Integrated IT Solutions. The multi-stage vision will be rolled out over the course of several years and includes disparate pieces.

Logitech Squeezebox Radio: The next great Wi-Fi radio? | Crave - Logitech already owns the Editors' Choice award for Wi-Fi radios with the Squeezebox Boom , but it looks as if the company may be competing with itself for the award with the newly announced Squeezebox Radio ($200 list price).
From the initial news release, the Squeezebox Radio looks to pack most of the functionality of the Boom into an even smaller package; that means you can stream your MP3 collection plus thousands of internet radio stations and music services like Rhapsody, Napster, Pandora, Sirius, and Last.fm. It also one-ups the Boom by adding a color screen, and the capability to display album art, artist/track information, and Flickr slideshows. Logitech also mentions Facebook integration--a first on Squeezebox products--so you can share your favorite tracks with your friends. Aside from the feature list, the Squeezebox Radio also looks to have one of the most attractive designs of any Wi-Fi radio we've seen.
