It makes me grateful for technology such as cell phones that allow me to communicate with them, but it also means that visits become actual events. It’s a nine hour drive between Southern New Hampshire and Niagara Region Ontario. They are visiting me this weekend. Thus my disappearance from the blogs I would normally be commenting on. Because I’ve been so busy with visitors, and the summer leaves me craving smoothies, here’s another smoothie for your enjoyment. This one makes use of fresh fruits readily available in the summer, especially watermelon.

Earlier I made gingerbread houses meant to perch on the edge of a mug, but I wanted to work on a few more things.
First, since these are meant to be eaten I wanted to cut down on the amount of royal icing. I still used it to assemble the houses, but to get sugar decorations to stick to the roofs I decided to use simple syrup. I heated one part water and one part sugar and let it bubble for a while on the stove just so it would thicken. After it was thoroughly cooled I put a dot on the roof and spread it around using a small brush I keep to use as a mini pastry brush. Then I sprinkled sanding sugar or nonpareils. I let it dry overnight and it worked nicely. It tastes a lot better than a layer of royal icing, and I like the way it allows the gingerbread to peek through. Second, I added a chimney. I think it turned out very cute, though I found that the taller chimneys looked incongruous, so I’ll stick to very short chimneys.
Popsicles! Not to sound full of myself, but I’m pretty sure this is the be all, end all of popsicle roundups. There’s a little something for everyone: the foodies, the purists, the ones who prefer frozen yogurt, the ones who prefer a little alcohol, everyone. Tweny-five options to be exact. The post I did last summer on the cold guys was one of DC’s most viewed ever, so I thought you’d all be up for another round – was I right?

I’ve received no less than 1,299,347 requests for Elmo Cake Pops since I started turning my pops into characters more than a year ago. Okay, I’m exaggerating a little on the number.
But seriously … Elmo has been one of the most requested pops. So I decided to finally put what’s been in my head on a lollipop stick. And it didn’t hurt that just last week I found the perfect candy for Elmo’s ping-pong-like-eyes. Solid white. But don’t worry. To make your own Sesame Street Cake pops, follow the basic cake pop instructions and use the following tips to decorate. Elmo’s noses are simply orange jelly beans.
