NARRATOR: It appeared suddenly in England: a strange and horrific plague called mad cow disease.

KEITH WRITER: He had very jerky movements, and he could suddenly decide to try and get up and walk when he wasn't capable of doing any kind of action, which would often result in him injuring himself or falling over if there was nobody around to help him. HELEN CHURCHILL: He started hallucinating. DR. DR. DR. DR. PROF. PROF. PROF. DR. DR. DR. Mad Cow Disease | PBS NewsHour | Jan. 26, 2001. PAUL MILLER: At this year’s farm trade fair in Berlin, the cattle and dairy cows drew a crowd — the stands selling pork and ham drew the customers.

Germans buy 40 percent less beef these days because of fears of mad cow disease or bovine spongiform encephalopathy, BSE, and less sausage containing beef byproducts, a German staple. The country’s new agriculture minister, Renate Kuenast, is trying to restore public confidence, while estimating there could be 500 new cases of mad cow in Germany this year. RENATE KUENAST, German Agriculture Minister: We need new rules for agriculture, agriculture that look at food safety first. PAUL MILLER: Minister Kuenast’s predecessor, and the health minister, both resigned in the face of public anger about the government’s handling of mad cow. RENATE KUENAST: We are not at the end of fighting against BSE; we are somewhere in the middle. PAUL MILLER: 180,000 head of cattle were infected overall in Britain. CONSUMER: I am afraid. DR. DR. Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (/ˈkrɔɪtsfɛlt ˈjɑːkoʊb/ KROITS-felt YAH-kohb)[1] or CJD is a degenerative neurological disorder that is incurable and invariably fatal.[2] CJD is at times called a human form of mad cow disease (bovine spongiform encephalopathy or BSE).[3] However, given that BSE is believed to be the cause of variant Creutzfeldt–Jakob (vCJD) disease in humans, the two are often confused.[4] CJD is caused by an agent called a prion.

Prions are misfolded proteins that replicate by converting their properly folded counterparts, in their host, to the same misfolded structure they possess. The disease leads to rapid neurodegeneration, causing the brain tissue to develop holes and take a more sponge-like texture. Classification[edit] Types of CJD include: variant (vCJD):[5] This is thought to be caused by the consumption of food contaminated with prions, which also cause BSE. sporadic (sCJD):[6] This accounts for 85% of cases of CJD.[7] familial (fCJD):[8] iatrogenic: Cause[edit] Stanley B.
