Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum opens new Renzo Piano-designed wing. BOSTON, MA.- On January 19, 2012, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum will open to the public a new addition to its original building, kicking off an inaugural season of exhibitions, performances, and events that highlight the Museum’s wide range of programming. The new 70,000-square-foot wing was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano to preserve the historic 1902 building and alleviate pressures caused by years of use. Situated behind the original building on its site along the Fenway, the new addition provides purpose-built spaces for concerts, exhibitions, and classes, along with enhanced visitor amenities.

Following special advance previews for Museum members on January 15-18, the grand opening celebration will begin with a ribbon-cutting ceremony with City of Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino on January 19, followed by three days of free Bank of America Community Opening Days from January 19-21. World Architecture News, Contact, architecture jobs. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum has announced the official opening date for its new Renzo Piano-designed wing as 19th January 2012. Planned to coincide with the original unveiling of the Museum by Isabella Gardner in January 1903, the opening ceremony will be coupled with the first American museum solo show of artist Victoria Morton, whose yet-to-be-titled exhibition will consist of a range of paintings composed exclusively for the event.

Norma Jean Calderwood Director of the Museum, Anne Hawley commented: “The new wing will reveal the vibrant programming that has been constrained by the historic building’s spaces - a true opening up of the Gardner Museum. Our opening celebration in 2012 will feature all of this programming in purpose-built spaces for the first time in the museum’s history. We invite the public to join us as we celebrate the renewal of the Gardner Museum and the premiere of Renzo Piano’s brilliantly designed spaces which give contemporary form to Gardner’s legacy.” Greater Boston.
