INVOLUTION | Savannah Georgia. The Larry Martin studio took a long hard look at the conventional column design and decided to completely revolutionize it. They subdivided the typical solid facade into triangulated panels to add dynamism and movement. The new design challenges the concept of structure and ornament and presents it in a unique and new manner. By Danya Hakky.
ContemPLAY pavilion | DRS + FARMM. Light Form by Mathieu Rivier is a sculpture that explores different forms of representations and interactions using a solid but uneven display.
Each form of interaction consists of an animation that is played on the surface when you touch it. Different sounds are emitted in synchronization with the touch and the animation. The faceted landscape is built on a plinth with integrated projector and infrared sensing to display content that is constrained to the form of the display but offers quite unique interactive experience. Light Form ECAL/Mathieu Rivier from ECAL on Vimeo. Building and technics In order for the faceted surface to become a display for multi-touch interaction, it was necessary to design a shape in heat-welded semi-transparent plastic which allows the projection and detection of fingers from inside the structure. The skeleton of the installation is made out of welded steel to insure the rigidity of the structure.
Makoto orisaki: 'or-ita' rotary cardboard cutter blade - part 1. Nov 24, 2010 makoto orisaki: 'or ita' rotary cardboard cutter blade part 1 origami magic ball by makoto orisaki makoto orisaki has developed ‘or-ita’, a special shaped blade which fits inside any rotary cutter. with this tool one can perforate cardboard or any other dull material, and then fold it just like paper, sculpting the chosen medium in their own way. the young japanese designer has created a limited edition of these self-made cutter blades, which he is selling in order to earn enough money to start mass producing them. using this new tool, six designers have created three-dimensional works made of cardboard, demonstrating the blade’s capabilities. the have been presented in an exhibition entitled ‘cardboard high’, curated by designboom friend eizo okada (publisher of and was on show at claska gallery&shop in tokyo, during tokyo designtide 2010. eizo okada (left) and makoto orisaki (right) image © designboom close-up image © designboom video.

Jan 24, 2013 folded origami table lamp by mirco kirsch for belt + sund ‘folded origami table lamp’ by mirco kirsch for belt + sund conceived from a single sheet of metal by mirco kirsch, ‘the belt + sund table lamp’ is folded into shape by hand, with indentations indicating the pattern design. being pre-assembled, the electrical components and light fixtures are already installed – taking only five minutes to build. aside from the folding pattern, the surface coating is of utmost importance – the tight bends of up to 180 degrees require a very withstanding finish that does not break during the folding process. folding step 2 folding step 3 folding step 4 folding step 5 folding step 6 folding step 7 folding step 8 folding step 9 finished lamp designboom has received this project from our ‘DIY submissions‘ feature, where we welcome our readers to submit their own work for publication. see more project submissions from our readers here.

..:: DAZ Architects ::.. 2B Glass Pavilion | University of Southern California. A group of fourteen second-year architecture students at the University of Southern California, under the direction of professor Roland Wahlroos-Ritter, have been studying the material properties of glass, steel, concrete, timber, and masonry. They began by researching traditional methods of construction, conducting precedent analysis, and designing our own structures based on our research.
As a studio, they deepened their understanding of glass by creating an installation in USC’s Watt Hall. They designed and built a prototype approximately 50’ long, 10’wide, and 10’ tall. The prototype allowed them to better understand how a glass structure would be made as well as the spatial experience it would generate without the extra expense cause by using real glass.
More details can be found below. Photo by Roland Wahlroos-Ritter The pavilion has been made of 800 translucent and triangular polycarbonate pieces that were folded like origami and zip-tied together.
Resin Planters on Behance. 1. 3.

The Department of Architecture at the University of Cambridge recently played host to an event called the Cardboard Banquet in which students were asked to design and erect a temporary paper pavilion as part of an architecture studio called Bricolage. The pavilion was made entirely of folded cardboard and assembled within three days, and later followed by a public banquet which was fittingly serenaded by an accordionist.
