Coltman attended Michigan State University, majoring in Journalism until a professor requested she switch majors - "Apparently making a story better with added features isn't acceptable in the news world," Coltman laments. With a BA in English from Northern Illinois University, Coltman has written for local, regional and national publications. Coltman writes a weekly blog called, "My Life in a Nutshell," the impetus for her first book.

I started writing in Grade 5. I wrote a story about some animals in a forest that was being threatened by logging. I made it into a homemade book with illustrations I had done myself. My teacher found it in my desk at school and made me read it to the class.

There's no such thing as a book that has gone too far. I'll never understand what people mean by this. If you're concerned with limits, a book isn't what you were looking for to begin with.

I think blogging helps calm me when I am stressed. I’m choosing to write this blog entry at this particular moment for that reason. I will talk about why. Often when I go to bed I get these thoughts which I refer to rather simply as the “bad thoughts.”
