BPL Forum - R2R2R: Questions for runners

For me: 1) I jogged some of the downhills, I should have literally "hiked" my own hike and I would have finished looser and probably sooner. 2) No poles. IMO, people with their leg in a cast benefit from crutches. I try to avoid that situation. 3) I eat normal food and a lot of water. To do it again, I'd have (a) found someway, somehow to mile up more despite the 3 feet of snow on the ground all winter, (b) not run the downhills, personally, (c) brought less food - some reserves, but not double what I needed (Phantom Ranch was an option to resupply with power bars, etc) (d) put some of the calories into my water bottles - something I did back when I did 100k's when I was half my age, but haven't found a need for IF I'm miled up prior to a 40- or 50-mile day hike.

Things that went well: The 5 am start was good for me, earlier would have just made for more dark miles. TrailRunner Magazine Report. Larry RosinskiOctober 31, 2012LIKETWEET Our Grand Canyon adventure got rolling on Thursday, October 11, 2012, when we converged in Phoenix.

The first order of business was introductions. I've known Tom for a while, but I had never met two of our team (Shannon, a dentist and retired Army Ranger Colonel from New Orleans, and Tim, a law-school professor from Atlanta). The fit seemed good, with each man bringing the right perspective, level of experience, sense of humor and commitment. The next order of business was to eat, and stock up on provisions for the big day. The tone was set. We dined on Pappa John's pizza in a local park, and took away some additional slices for trail food .

Properly fueled, we settled in while Tom drove us north. We pulled into Grand Canyon National Park around 6 p.m., and were delighted to get free admission, a federal gesture to Colonel Shannon and his service to our country. From there, we claimed our rooms and grabbed dinner. Running The Grand Canyon. On May 19th, myself and a few of my ultra running friends woke up with the sun along The Grand Canyon’s North Rim.

Running The Grand Canyon

We had driven 12 hours from Colorado to embark on one of Ultra Runnings true Rights of Passage, The Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim (R2R2R). I knew from my extensive research since I first thought about taking on the journey, some 4 years ago now, that it wasn’t an easy sojourn. The Grand Canyon is a massive place where temperatures between the rim and the bottom swing drastically. A journey run across the canyon is one that requires the utmost respect, and due diligence, from those who seeks it’s wonders up close and personal. So, it was with no surprise the number of un/under prepared runners we encountered on our journey.
