The "Tricks of the Trade" sessions, for example, consisted of a huge circle of people, contributing widely with information on, for example, first/second/third stage difficulties and so on. Many of the speakers' contributions were of their own experience as midwives: some work in the difficult territory of uncertified lay midwifery. Here, there were many invaluable lessons to be learnt; what could be richer than a cross-cultural pooling of "tricks" time-honoured, grounding midwifery skills and demonstrations tumbled out into the big ring.
