Libyans celebrated the ousting of Col Gaddafi in Tripoli's newly renamed Martyrs' Square After four decades in power, Col Muammar Gaddafi was ousted when rebels took the capital Tripoli in August. Col Gaddafi and his family went on the run. On 31 October the former leader was captured and killed on the outskirts of Sirte. Eight months of civil war - and Nato's operation - had come to an end.
With governments committing huge sums to tackle the world's most pressing problems, from the instability of financial markets to climate change and poverty, corruption remains an obstacle to achieving much needed progress. The 2010 Corruption Perceptions Index shows that nearly three quarters of the 178 countries in the index score below five, on a scale from 10 (highly clean) to 0 (highly corrupt). These results indicate a serious corruption problem. To address these challenges, governments need to integrate anti-corruption measures in all spheres, from their responses to the financial crisis and climate change to commitments by the international community to eradicate poverty. Transparency International advocates stricter implementation of the UN Convention against Corruption , the only global initiative that provides a framework for putting an end to corruption.

Wendy Lukehart | June 26, 2009 When I heard that the District of Columbia Public Library was receiving a set of high-quality posters of American art for each site—thanks to the NEH/ALA Picturing America grant—I couldn’t have been more excited. Our staff of 50 children’s and teen librarians had just received training in Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS).
The narrative The Great Migration discusses how individuals and industries forged opportunities for themselves and African-American workers outside the South. The lesson Entrepreneurs and the African-American Dream should be used as a follow-up activity to or in conjunction with the narrative in either history or economics classes. Students will make a simple graph of labor supply and labor demand in the North and South in the early twentieth century. They then will conduct research using business journals, corporate reports, and the Internet to identify top contemporary African-American entrepreneurs. The "Quest for Political Power" segment of the narrative, The Great Migration recounts African-American migrants' eager entry into the political process. Priorities and Power is a lesson plan that may be used with this narrative in history or political science/government classes.

When booking the cruise leg of the trip, I admit that I was a little hesitant. The idea of not being able to get off the boat, not being able to find my own food or hanging out with the same people for a while was pretty unappealing but I've now been converted. It's not exactly how I'd choose to travel forever but after lugging my suitcase through seven countries, it was nice to unpack in my cabin and worry about things like whether I'd make the Ring Toss Tournament that day while a ship took me to a different location almost every morning. Some of the features onboard were extravagant but after chatting to a lot of other passengers, it turns out our ship was on the smaller/humble side. Some other ships feature moving bars, bakeries, cupcake shops, accommodate about 6000 passengers and have over 20 pools. This blows my mind because the cinema, restaurant and disco on our ship was a lot more than I'd expect/need but hey, I guess that's what cruising is all about.
