Providing prices isn't as easy as it sounds. A federal report demonstrates what many have long known: Most physician offices are unable to provide an estimate of the amount of money a patient eventually will pay out of pocket before medical services are provided, making it nearly impossible for price to play a role in health care decisions.

"My first reaction is that I'm disappointed they spent all this money to do this report," said Yul Ejnes, MD, chair of the American College of Physicians Board of Regents. "They could have asked any physician. " This is in part because it is not always clear what patients need before they are seen, but there are aspects of the health system that complicate the issue even more. How The Accounting and Health IT Geeks Solved the Healthcare Cost Crisis

Earlier this week, a coworker passed along a link to an article with a rather bold title, “How to Solve the Cost Crisis in Health Care”. This article was written by world-renowned Harvard strategists Kaplan and Porter who are best known for the Balanced Scorecard and Five Forces, respectively. I was interested in understanding the strategist’s solution to the healthcare cost problem.

I ultimately came away with the basic understanding that accounting and IT talent should work together towards this goal. Kaplan and Porter start the article with a simple phrase that completely reframes the healthcare reform discussion, “The biggest problem with health care isn’t with insurance or politics. HealthBlawg: David Harlow quoted in AMA American Medical News story on geolocation services

I'm quoted in the current edition of American Medical News in a story that looks at the question of whether and how health care providers should use geolocation services (e.g., Foursquare, Gowalla) as additional channels through which they may communicate with patients, colleagues and referral sources -- or through which they may encourage patients and others to communicate among themselves. I've touched on this issue in recent presentations on health care social media, and have noted that even "checking in" on line at an STD clinic -- an activity discounted by Mark Scrimshire in the article -- is something that people will do for a badge -- check out this fall's MTV/Foursquare Get Yourself Tested campaign.

Technology Will Ease Healthcare Dilemma

That is the firm prediction of University of Ulster experts who have unveiled an initiative that will boost the already thriving intelligent-sensor technology sector on both sides of the border. With the world population over 65 set to rocket from 600 million in the year 2000 to close to two billion by 2050, researchers say that health and social services will be stretched to the limit unless new approaches are adopted. Cutting edge research in many disciplines is enhancing Ulster’s standing as a base for ground-breaking research. The latest UK-wide Research Assessment Exercise has reported strong world-leading and internationally-leading quality research at Ulster, with areas such as Metallurgy and Materials, and Computer Science and Informatics, significantly climbing the UK university league tables.
