InShare952 Five years ago today, Twitter’s @Jack published the very first Tweet, the first of billions of Tweets that would eventually change the way millions of people share, learn, and communicate. While other news media (Twitter included) report that Jack’s first Tweet simply stated, “inviting coworkers” – the first tweet on record by @jack actually read, “just setting up my twttr.” That same Tweet was published by all employees at a time when Twitter was actually known as Twttr.

In five short years, the service has come a long way, earning a reported 200+ million users (and bots) and a market valuation of $8 – $10 billion. What’s far more eminent however is not everything Twitter’s attained to date, its promise and legacy lies in all that it has yet to fulfill. Daily Mail Steals Twitpics, Gets A Huge Bill For Unauthorised Use [Updated] - TNW UK. Updates at the foot of the post. The Daily Mail has found itself at the wrong end of a royalty battle after it published photos posted to social networking site Twitter without obtaining permission, only to find it would be billed ten times the normal rate for unauthorised use. According to The Register, documentary film-maker Emily James had taken a series of images to taken at St Vincent Polling Station in Dalston on the day of the general election, capturing the “voting frenzy” at the polls. The photos were then posted to the Just Do It Twitter feed (a project linked with James) via the image sharing service Twitpic. Many news outlets, including the Mail found the photos and proceeded to publish three of the images in articles covering the election. Whilst all other outlets contacted James to seek permission to use the photos, the Mail published the images, without byline or any contact with the copyright holder.

Yes, you read that right. Later in the email: Twitter becomes key evidence in case after Jameg Blake charged with murdering friend, cops say. Jameg Blake, 22, is accused of shooting and killing Kwame Dancy (below) after the two childhood friends got into a tiff on Twitter. It started as a simple Twitter beef, 140-character spurts of anger by two young men who grew up together. But the tough talk exploded out of cyberspace and onto the streets of Harlem, where a college student was gunned down feet from Gov.

Paterson's home. Now tweets sent by victim Kwame Dancy, 22, and accused killer Jameg Blake, 22, could become key evidence in a murder trial, the Daily News has learned. Dancy's mother, Madeline Smith, is appalled Internet chest-thumping could have led to blood spilled on the sidewalk. "That's not a reason to shoot somebody," she said last week. Dancy, who was studying to be a nurse, was killed by a shotgun blast to the neck Dec. 1 across from Lenox Terrace in Harlem, where he grew up with his father. Charged with murder, he pleaded not guilty Wednesday and was held without bail.

"They've been friends since they were kids. TwitAlbums: Private, Collaborative Content Sharing Via Twitter. Have you ever wanted to share a set of memories with some of your Twitter friends, keeping the content private while still allowing for collaboration between certain folks? It's not anything we thought we wanted, either, but after playing with TwitAlbums, we find the concept charming. Here's how it works: Using Twitter's OAuth function, users log in and create collections or "albums" containing multimedia content and text comments. They can invite whatever users they like to join them in adding files, and only the users they invite can see the content or comments.

Best of all it looks like this little app already has a monetization strategy in place. The concept is inherently charming. Users can then choose others to collaborate with them on the album. Collaborators can add content, leave comments and invite other users, depending on the permissions set by the original album creator. 10 Kinds Of Tweets That Are Guaranteed Brand-Killers. Policing:Further adventures on Twitter « Superintendent Mark Payne. Over the past 24 hours, the Local Policing Unit from Birmingham South have been tweeting live incidents and their officers’ responses to them. Armed only with a hashtag (#bsp24) and a new twitter account, they have ventured out into the world of social media.

Judging by the excellent feedback they have received, I am sure they will be extremely pleased with the results. Two weeks ago, I spoke to the Commander from Birmingham South, Phil Kay, and discussed the idea with him. He is really forward thinking and had already set the ball rolling with his communications team. At that point they had around 70 people following them on Twitter. I have blogged before about the need for police forces to engage more pro-actively in the area of social media, and the example above really does illustrate the point.

Throughout my years in the Police, we have always struggled to get some communities to engage with us. There are now hundreds of officers up and down the country using social media. A Twitter tool for conferences – Wiffiti « Bryony Taylor. A friend shared a new tool with me the other day called ‘Wiffiti’. Now I’ve posted before about how good Twitter is for conferences. This little gadget gets around the issue that not everyone in your audience at an event will either be on Twitter or have a device on them that enables them to tweet there. You create a ‘screen’ on wiffiti by choosing key words – if it’s a conference you would choose the conference ‘hashtag’ (eg. something like #tech10). All the tweets using that term will appear on the screen in a pretty format and move around like a movie. Here’s an example one I made using the key words ‘learning’, ‘lluk’, ‘@ll_uk’ and ‘#lrnchat’: I wanted to embed it here in my blog but I couldn’t get it to work, so apologies.

Here’s a screen capture of what it looks like (the real version is animated with the different messages moving around on the screen, to see that version click on the link above): Quite a nice little tool I think. Microsoft’s 2010: real-time collaboration concept. Stephen from AeroXP has snatched an exclusive from Microsoft’s killer deck of concept videos showcasing Microsoft’s vision for the future of computing. This particular 6-minute long video was produced in 2005 and focuses on the scenario of ‘real-time collaboration’. The story involves a scientist who was snowed-in on return from his vacation, forcing him to work as well as give a presentation to 900 other scientists all from the hotel room.

It’s a story we can all relate to. The technologies this demo utilities includes smartphones, mobile connectivity, cross-platform communication, Tablet PCs, virtual office synchronization, collaborative editing, professional networking (think LinkedIn), VOIP, internet shopping and remote presentations with video. This is also a particularly ‘red’ concept with most technologies glowing a warm shade of red for all consistency purposes, or perhaps in 2010, red becomes the world’s favorite color. Ho John Lee’s Weblog » A last look at Twitter userbase growth (through June 2009) Ho John Lee | July 13th, 2009 | 10:03 pm | 1 comment A number of people have been asking about updates to the earlier posts on Twitter’s user profile population as well as some statistical analysis.

I’m joining the Microsoft Bing search team so I probably won’t be sharing as much data in the future, but I wanted to get a couple of charts out first. Here’s an updated look at Twitter’s user base growth, through June 2009. This survey has many spam accounts pruned out, so the actual number of user profiles at any point in time is probably higher than the graph plotted here. Up and to the right, heading past 13M is the main takeaway. Also note that the majority of Twitter profiles have been created within the past few months.

Here’s the corresponding estimate of new user accounts per day. Unfortunately I probably won’t be putting together any stats visualizations here as I transition the SocialQuant work to Microsoft Bing. Whole Foods Market - 140 Best Twitter Feeds. Technology | Twitter hype punctured by study. Micro-blogging service Twitter remains the preserve of a few, despite the hype surrounding it, according to research. Just 10% of Twitter users generate more than 90% of the content, a Harvard study of 300,000 users found. Estimates suggest it now has more than 10 million users and is growing faster than any other social network. However, the Harvard team found that more than half of all people using Twitter updated their page less than once every 74 days. And most people only ever "tweet" once during their lifetime, the researchers found.

"Based on the numbers, Twitter is certainly not a service where everyone who has seen it has instantly loved it," said Bill Heil, a graduate from Harvard Business School who carried out the work. On a typical online social network, he said, the top 10% of users accounted for 30% of all production. Silent crowds Its growth has been described as "explosive" and it has become the poster child of social networking sites, particularly among media companies. How long have you been on Twitter? Your tweets aren’t private and can be quoted in the UK press.

8 February '11, 04:17pm Follow Unprotected tweets are fair game for press coverage, it’s been ruled in the UK today. The decision by the Press Complaints Commission follows a complaint from a government official whose tweets about being hungover at work were published in the Daily Mail and Independent on Sunday newspapers. The BBC reports that Sarah Baskerville claimed that she had a reasonable right to expect privacy on Twitter.

However, the PCC didn’t see it like that – they sided with the newspapers who pointed out that the posts were publicly available to anyone who wanted to read them and that Baskerville should have protected her tweets if she didn’t want them read by a wider audience. The PCC’s Director, Stephen Abell said: “In this case, the Commission decided that republication of material by national newspapers, even though it was originally intended for a smaller audience, did not constitute a privacy intrusion.” OFT clamps down on Twitter - Celebrity endorsements getting out of hand. Well, that didn’t take long.

Just four seconds after midnight in Japan on January 1st, Twitterers set an all-time record in the number of Tweets sent per second (TPS). At that moment, the world sent a staggering 6,939 TPS wishing friends and followers a fond “Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu” (“Happy New Year!”). On Oshogatsu (Japanese New Year), Japan virtually shuts down as people spend the day with family and the people with whom they are closest. People make it a point to call their friends and connect with everyone they know to celebrate. The new record more than doubles the previous one of 3,283 TPS, set during Japan’s victory over Denmark in last summer’s World Cup. Japan wasn’t alone.
