Day 1: Neil Stephenson, District Principal of Innovation and Inquiry (SD37) « 180 Days of Learning

What is this website? The basic idea is very simple – a blog where each day of the school year (hence the 180 days title) someone shares their ideas about our Bold Vision. This will be a place where anyone from the Delta School District – students, teachers, principals, coordinators, facility staff, technology support, district staff, parents – can have a platform to talk about their own learning, curiosities or passions, and how they are seeing Delta’s Vision come to life. We know there is incredible teaching and learning going on in our schools and we want to hear about it. The 180 Days of Learning project will provide a vehicle for sharing both across the district and beyond. Why this initiative? • A great deal of educational research supports personal reflection as one of the key elements in engaged learning. . • Part of our Bold Vision speaks about innovation and risk taking. How to get involved? Learning to adapt: the changing technology of B.C. classrooms.

Distributed Learning

DL gives both rural and urban students in British Columbia improved access, more choice, and flexibility to learn outside classroom schedules. The vision for DL is to provide a quality, dynamic and engaging learning environment that all students in the province can access. DL, where a B.C. certified teacher instructs the child’s educational program, is different from Homeschooling, where the parent or guardian is responsible for the child’s educational program. See Distributed Learning vs. The B.C. 21st Century Learning. In 21st Century Learning, students use educational technologies to apply knowledge to new situations, analyze information, collaborate, solve problems, and make decisions.

21st Century Learning

Utilizing emerging technologies to provide expanded learning opportunities is critical to the success of future generations. Improved options and choice for students will help improve student completion and achievement. In its 10th Report in 2007, the Premier’s Technology Council (PTC) identified technology and e-learning as central to addressing future skill shortages in the work force, particularly in rural areas of the province.

The PTC described “blended learning” – technology-enhanced learning that is both online and in the classroom– as an effective approach to enhance education. The PTC recommendations are consistent with international initiatives that promote 21st Century Learning and the use of technologies to support student choice and flexibility.
