Researchers at Johns Hopkins have established a high-efficiency cell-cell fusion system, providing a new model to study how fusion works. The scientists showed that fusion between two cells is not equal and mutual as some assumed, but, rather, is initiated and driven by one of the fusion partners. The discovery, they say, could lead to improved treatments for muscular dystrophy, since muscle regeneration relies on cell fusion to make muscle fibers that contain hundreds or even thousands of nuclei.

Medical Breakthroughs -- Medical News and Health Information.
in Science and Technology, About Us
Issues in Science & Technology is a forum for discussion of public policy related to science, engineering, and medicine. This includes policy for science (how we nurture the health of the research enterprise) and science for policy (how we use knowledge more effectively to achieve social goals), with emphasis on the latter. Although Issues is published by the scientific and technical communities, it is not just a platform for these communities to present their views to Congress and the public. Rather, it is a place where researchers, government officials, business leaders, and others with a stake in public policy can share ideas and offer specific suggestions. Unlike a popular magazine, in which journalists report on the work of experts, or a professional journal, in which experts communicate with colleagues, Issues offers authorities an opportunity to share their insights directly with a broad audience. The page you are trying to access failed to load. The cardiovascular continuum links various risk factors, like hypertension and high cholesterol levels, with different types of heart disease that become progressively more severe throughout a person's life. By treating risk factors that occur early on in the cardiovascular continuum, like hypertension, it may be possible to prevent or slow the development of heart disease and to prolong life. Read more Developing Heart Developing rapidly and early, the heart is the first organ to function in the embryo, and it takes up most of the room in the fetus's midsection in the first few weeks of its life. During its initial stages of development, the fetal heart actually resembles those of other animals.Healthcare Social Media
